Album of the Year ?
I heard Get Cape . . . for the first time on the Reading Festival coverage by the BBC, and this alone moved me to buy the album. This has to be one of the freshest and most vibrant albums of the year.
All power to Sam and his crew for a great live performance and a great album full of individual songs of great quality.
If you do not buy this you are sadly missing a fantastic debut album, there will be more I am sure.
Superman Sam!
This is a very wonderful record. A lone performer called Sam Duckworth donning a massive monicker that seems doomed to obscurity. I sure hope that Sam gets the recognition he deserves. Armed with an acoustic guitar, an occasional moog synthesizer, an occasional trumpet and some peerless pop songs, Sam moves pop music upwards and onwards with this CD. Some folks will judge ths musical style as nothing new and reactionary even. Don't worry, they could not be more wrong - only the deepest cynic could fail to be moved by the songs on offer here.
This is close to my favourite CD of the year, only eclipsed by The Rocket Summer; unmistakenly English, stylish and cool, Get cape, Wear Cape, Fly indeed. This one will last forever - you will be in a box before you tire of this record. Go get it now!
Great new talent
This is my favourite album of 2006. He has an individual style based around an acoustic guitar, drums, brass section and distinctive vocals - a great English sound (reminds me of the Jam or Badly Drawn Boy). This gives the album a raw, busker-ish sound but this adds to, rather than detracts from it's appeal (Dylan wasn't half bad after all). His lyrics are largely heart-felt socio-polital commentary (sounds heavy going but it isn't at all) and it's easy to find yourself singing along; there are some really great tunes. It's an album I can't recommend highly enough, not a dud track and most are outstanding. If you get chance to see him live don't miss it, he is absolutely awesome.
