Underrated Solo Outing From Mr Hall
A lesser known release from Daryl Hall, coming out at the height of the Hall&Oates 80s heyday, 3 Hearts...still sounds remarkably fresh and fun after 20-odd years. The production does date the album to the period, but it's sufficiently good not to sound too dated, with plenty of quality players balancing the booming drums and digital synth overtones.
Daryl is in fine voice throughout, and is obviously enjoying himself as he gets to stretch out over a whole range of pop material. Dreamtime, complete with phased strings and harpsichord finale, and For You are both bright'n'breezy pop numbers; Only A Vision, I Wasn't Born Yesterday and Foolish Pride are very much in the classic H&O vein; Next Step is a chunk of skittering 80s synth-funk-pop; and Let It Out is a stomping little rocker that gives the guitars some elbow room. The stand outs though are Someone Like You, a big well-crafted soul number featuring some soaring guitar work from Robbie McIntosh, the light and airy Right As Rain (with backing vocals courtesy of Joni Mitchell), and the stunning closer, the impassioned, atmospheric What's Gonna Happen To Us.
Hall is such an excellent performer that he almost can't help but impart a touch of sheer class to whatever he records, and although by no means a 'classic', this is a thoroughly underrated album which deserves reappraisal.
