Album Description
Nigeria Disco Funk Special is an amazing collection of heavy dancefloor grooves from urban Lagos in the `70s - hot and driving slices of Funk, Disco and Boogie that show just how vibrant the music scene was in one of West Africa's most populous and culturally diverse cities. In the `70s, it wasn't just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos - the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and Micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings.

Disco Funk Special
I have know idea where this series has come from, but having brought and been massively impressed with "Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-1976" I thought I'd buy this as well on a whim. Once again I was actually quite startled by how good a compilation it is.
The musical content is really quite well explained by the title. The tracks themselves are not focused on particularly successful artists or hits from the period, it is simply music that the compiler enjoyed within the parameters of the title.
It is well worth singling out the opener, "Take Your Soul" by The Sahara All Stars, as the stand out track, but really each and every track is well worth a listen.
Just like the compilation I mentioned at the top of this review, not only does Nigeria Disco Funk Special contain some wonderful music it comes smartly packaged and with a well researched and informative booklet that places the artists and their work in the proper context. In my view those who like to know all about their music are as well catered for as those who are quite content just to sit and listen to brilliant songs.
I really cannot recommend both albums in this series enough. As someone with a little knowledge of the more famous bands and musicians to come out of West Africa, I was absolutely delighted to be introduced to a wider a array of artists whose music stands comparison to their more illustrious colleagues. Since buying them I have actually found ,myself looking up some of the artists and being surprised to find no albums by them in production!
Awesome!!
Soundway records have come up trumps with this barnstorming selection of funk and boogie from the Lagos nightclub in the mid70's
The Sahara's Allstars "Take Yo" sets the tone of the record - funky guitar riff, a couple of searing trumpet solos, indestructible groove held tight by some solid bass.
"Will of the people," carries on in much the same vein - but it gets better - a skipping disco beat is added.
"Greetings" funk flute loop, burst of trumpets, soulful chorus, disco in its feel. I really like this track - it gives the compilation real depth. "Some More" is another quirky feet tapper. It leads nicely into the incessant guitar riff of Mota Giny. And it goes on. Oh, go on. Just buy it . It's sensational.
