Listmania!
An eclectic selection of excellent music.
Pink MoonPink Moon by Nick Drake
Buy new: £4.55 / Used from: £2.84
Nick Drake now has a cult following in the UK and for good reason. He went unnoticed during his day, but his masterpieces are finally being recognised.
Clap Your Hands Say YeahClap Your Hands Say Yeah by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.49
A more modern album. If you take the first track for what it is (novelty/joke), and listen through the album, you should be pleasantly surprised. One of the best albums of recent years.
Deltron 3030Deltron 3030 by Deltron 3030
Buy used from: £8.50
I said it would be eclectic. Deltron is the first rapper that I genuinely liked. "Mastermind" is a track that I never get tired of.
Endtroducing.....Endtroducing..... by DJ Shadow
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.64
From the guy who introduced me to rap, to the guy who introduced me to hip hop. This is one of the best CDs of all time, produced by possible the best DJ of all time.
IllinoiseIllinoise by Sufjan Stevens
Buy new: £6.92 / Used from: £6.90
I'm not some pitchfork junk who looks to a website for his opinion. This is a great album, with good tunes and meaningful lyrics. Especially like "john wayne gracy jr.".
RoundsRounds by Four Tet
Buy new: £6.09 / Used from: £5.78
Fourtet aka Keiran Hebden has gift for sampling and mixing that is truly impressive. Rounds is probably the most accessible album. Great chillout music, but not boring. Very intricate giveit a listen
The Moon and AntarcticaThe Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse
Buy used from: £6.63
Some may object to the grating vocals, but I still think Modest Mouse are true genius. They're songs are catchy, they've got a genuinely gritty sound, and they can write!
Young TeamYoung Team by Mogwai
Buy used from: £227.39
Mogwai, the kings of post rock, are at their finest here on their third album. If you've not tried the like of mogwai before, here is as good a place as any to start.
Very MercenaryVery Mercenary by Herbaliser
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £3.60
The Herbaliser is another top quality hip-hop act, with this album being one of the best. Don't be fooled by the crap you hear on the radio, hip hop can be good, and that is proven right here.
PermutationPermutation by Amon Tobin
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £6.50
First jazzy album of the list is Amon Tobin. This stuff is amazing, nothing can quite match it in it's variety, and definately warrants a few listens. Another ninja tune artist, so quality assured.
SkalpelSkalpel by Skalpel
Buy new: £9.98
The first album by Skalpel, a pair of Polish jazz DJs, was an insta-classic for me. Much more of a pure jazz sound than Tobin, Skalpel scoure the world of jazz bringing you only the finest. Get it!
Kid AKid A by Radiohead
Buy new: £3.00 / Used from: £1.78
I'm trying to avoid the obvious, but I can't exclude Radiohead... So I went for Kid A, rather than OK Computer, just because I like it's electronic soundscapes. You should already own this CD.
Mishaps HappeningMishaps Happening by Quantic
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.49
Quantic (Soul Orchestra) have produced some classic records, and this was the first I heard of them, and is still my favourite. A wide range of genres, and not a bad song on the album.
Hangable Auto BulbHangable Auto Bulb by Aphex Twin
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £4.49
The infamous aphex "headf**k" twin. If you actually put some time in to listening to his music, Richard James comes across as he should - as a prodigy.
Melody A.M.Melody A.M. by Royksopp
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £1.45
Another more well known album, and one of my favourite chillout albums of all time. Meoldy A.M. is Royksopp's best by a long way.
Twin CinemaTwin Cinema by New Pornographers
Buy new: £7.22 / Used from: £4.36
Back to the genre that, tbh, I know best. New Pornographers are a fresh sounding band, and although originally a side project, have now overtaken their progenitors.
In Case We DieIn Case We Die by Architecture in Helsinki
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.25
The latest album by AIH, the ultra-twee indie pop band from New Zealand, is my favourite so far. Uplifting in the way only they can really be.
TigermilkTigermilk by Belle & Sebastian
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.78
The first, and best, album from Scottish sensations Belle & Sebastian. Originally very much anti-media, the huge cult following of B&S often hark back to the early days for good reason: Tigermilk
EntertainmentEntertainment by Gang Of Four
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £3.25
Gang of Four, a cornerstone of British post-punk, sound best on their debut album. With a very wide ranging influence that I can't begin to list here, this CD is essential if only for the history.
WeezerWeezer by Weezer
Buy new: £2.98 / Used from: £2.16
Another historical album, Weezer's self titled LP is a true classic. With the slightly more serious side showing through in some songs, and the laught out loud humour in others, this album is a must.
Maim That TuneMaim That Tune by Fila Brazillia
Buy used from: £30.80
The best of Fila Brazilia's original works lie mostly on this album, Maim That Tune. With some great latin influences (as the name suggests) this album provides great chill out tunes.
Give UpGive Up by Postal Service
Buy new: £6.43 / Used from: £5.24
Now quite rightly well known, this collaberation between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello is a defining album from indielectronica. Catchy lyrics, amazing beats.... Not a word to say against it.
FuneralFuneral by Arcade Fire
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.49
Another album that's had a lot of hype, this album is worth buying for the 'Neighbourhood' songs alone. One of many great bands to come from Canada recently.
Apologies to the Queen MaryApologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade
Buy new: £8.48 / Used from: £5.60
This album by Wolf Parade (following in the setps of Arcade Fire) took me a few listens to appreciate. Don't know why I didn't hear it first time, this album can't recieve enough praise. GST Queen!
Bryter LayterBryter Layter by Nick Drake
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.46
Gratz for getting this far. This list is ending with the same artist as it started, but you wouldn't guess it. Much more upbeat than Pink Moon, the track "northern sky" is the icing on the cake.
