Synopsis
This structured course in landscape painting encourages amateur artists to paint pictures right from the start, rather than brush strokes or laying a wash. The book is divided into three main sections - the first looks at the practical aspects of watercolour painting, the second encourages students to develop their own style while the third shows how to paint the many different elements of the landscape. The course includes numerous exercises which highlight the key points covered in each chapter. 12 demonstrative paintings are included.

Absolute Beginners Beware
It's still early days for me, but I've found this a bit of a struggle as a first watercolour tutorial book. Whilst I like the concept of diving straight in, I do find that the book glosses over basic things like exactly how wet the paint should be, and whether a wash is done horizontally or vertically for a given effect. A couple of extra pages on basic techniques would have helped me, and so I'm now looking for an alternative primer or face-to-face tuition.
From First Steps to Improver
A sudden urge come over me to have a go at watercolour painting, so I went in search of what I thought would be a suitable book to start me on the right track until I could enrol in an evening class. David Bellamy's Watercolour Landscape Course: From First Steps to Finished Paintings looked perfect to me.
I liked the fact that you were not bogged down in painting colour wheels and just mixing colours before you got to paint anything. With just a basic set of colours and a couple of brushes, David encourages you to paint - even on the back on an envelope if you haven't got proper watercolour paper.
The demonstrations are easy to follow and the exercises gradually increase in difficulty to stretch you.
When I did finally join an evening class, the tutor was impressed with what I had achieved from reading a book. I still refer to it on a regular basis for hints and tips. It's well worth a read.
A wonderful book to learn from
I love David Bellamy's style of painting and find his book has encouraged me to actually put the paint on the paper instead of looking and thinking about it. A great book.
