A Good Insight in to the Process of a Wildlife Artist
As a semi professional wildlife artist I take great interest in seeing how other such artists work.

I had seen a selection of Christophe Drochon's work in an art gallery and was amazed by the careful detail and vibrant colours of his work and so was excited when I found this title.

Painting Animals is a book that shows an insight into the artist's world and shows some of Drochon's fascinating and realistic paintings and step by step from sketchbook to finished painting how some of his works were created.

The text in the book is written by Franciose Coffrant and comes across as someone who has a respect for his subject and manages to discribe the processes of Drochon's work in a concise way avoiding many of the artistic terms that non artists or beginners may find mind boggling.

The strengths in this book lie in it's presentation, small volumes of text and illustrations / stills on every page. The step by step sections of some of Drochon's paintings shows the techniques he uses to achieve his outstanding and 'photo realist' style. There are also some small pointer sections for readers explaining paper types and weights used,oil paint drying times, home made pallettes and other interesting tips for the budding artist. The book finishes with a gallery of some more of the artists paintings and these are supported by a paragraph of text describing the work and some brief text highlighting the strengths or details of the painting.

The book loses a star for me for the simple reason thatthis is a book reflecting the personal work of an artist and I feel in someway the text somehow detracts from this it offers a lack of personal insight into the work and the descriptions of the plates at the end of the book lack that personal touch of an artist describing his work.

This is a great buy for anyone who is interested in seeing or understanding how a wildlife artist works but as an instructional manual, (which this publication makes no claim to being)there are other more instructional based books on this subject to buy such as Fur and Feathers (Keys to Painting)
