Synopsis
This book is written for the Labrador owner whose dog is a family pet and also a working gundog. It guides the owner through all stages of training the dog so that the standard of field performance required can be achieved, whether it be working the dog several days a week or once or twice a season. The book also includes chapters on buying, rearing and working Labradors.
Customer Reviews
Not quite what I expected
I have recently purchased this book expecting to find a guide to training my labrador. I found the book to be more of a narative, guiding you through some tips on how to do it. It is mainly concerned with walked up game, rough shooting and pheasant shooting. I am an avid pigeon shooter and this book proved to have little value to me. Nevertheless the book is good if you are thinking of becoming a trainer and a sound addition to a collection of this type.
Reakky Good Choice
Bought this with a few other books when I got my first gundog "Tess" and reading between books led me to decide this is quite by far the easies and most realistic choice of a training program. No quick fixes but just simple and easily understood methods.Tess is only 6 months old but using the methods laid out she is a pleasure to own and taking her on a (restricted) day out she was also the best behaved dog on the shoot no frantic shouts to call her in she stayed quite resevedly close by .,so the proofs in the pudding so to speak. And Ive never trained a gundog before (the Jack Russle I owns a nutcase)
The books writen for this side of the pond and no harsh methods but realistic disiplin if requred (one American book I read uses a catapult with a marble to tell your dog off!!!)Worth the money and recomended and slowly but surley its working but in a permenant way not just as circus tricks...a good book just to get good disiplin into your dog even if you have no intention of taking it shooting
Superb literature for any dog enthusiasts
As a new comer to gundogs I found this book absolutely superb. It is packed with information from buying a dog to intense training, it is also easy to read and understand all elements of the book. I haven't yet bought my first gundog but reading this book excites me on getting a dog and that cannot come quick enough, so I can put the knowledge I have learnt from this book into practice. David Hudson has obviously put a lot of time and experience into this book as well as a bit of humour that put quite a few smiles on my face along the way. I WILL read this book again (over and over again) and definitely recommend this to any dog enthusiasts, be it Gundogs or even just for a pet.
