Glider Pilots at Arnhem
This is a truly amazing read. As someone new to the subject I found the book a compelling read. I enjoyed it so much I have purchased another copy as a gift this Christmas. Great detail and an incredible real-life story. Fully recommended.
A great addition to the list of "Arnhem" books!
As an avid reader/collector of Arnhem related books I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one and when it arrived I was not disappointed! The amount of research that has gone into it is awesome and this is evident but the detail into which the book goes. I was particularly impressed with the number of "first-hand" accounts. To me, these are the only way to get a real understanding of what it must have been like during those days in September 1944. The GPR were known as 'total soldiers' and even if you had no idea about them prior to reading this book, by the time you finished you would understand why they deserved this title.
Perhaps the best review this book could get comes from a former member of the GPR who is mentioned in it and who fought at Arnhem. I gave him a copy and when he had finished reading it he simply said "fantastic". In my opinion if you want to learn about the GPR at Arnhem then this book is a 'must have'.
Glider Pilots at Arnhem
Glider Pilots at Arnhem exposes the huge contributions made by the men of the British Army's Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR) to some of the war's most daring operations. After delivering their payloads of troops and key equipments the men of the GPR rerolled as infantry soldiers, initially defending their Landing Zones before subsequently fighting alongside their comrades in 1 British Airborne Division. GPR suffered heavy casualties and was never reconstituted after Operation Market Garden. Peters and Buist have produced an exceptionally thorough account which gives additional insight into World War Two's most audacious endeavours.
