Hulk Smash!
The sequel to "The Return of the Monster" this is a powerful comic, although not as different. The story opens typically with the fugitive Banner arriving at a small town that is about to have itself, literally, turned upside down.
The strength of the comic is its presentation- the whole book is very cinematically structured and pieced together. A strong subplot is the conscience and moral dilemmas of a female cop (ex FBI negotiator) which is sensitively and effectively portrayed, probably the most effective part of the comic.
Unlike the previous book this one features the big green guy in full action- emergency vehicles, stores and office blocks fall prey to his gargantuan tantrum. There is a strong manga influence in the way this is portrayed which works very well- mostly only aftermath single frame pictures are shown. This is interspersed with some glimpses of the insane fury in his eyes and in the fear of the cops.
The single most striking image has to be when an FBI agent finds himself a couple of inches away from the Hulk, face to face- doubtless a memorable experience!
The writing is effective and convinving, conveying the right balance of psychology and introspection from those concerned: the story is not really that of Banner and the Hulk, even though they are always centre stage.
Overall a good solid graphic novel thats well worth a read, if a little short. Combine it with the other two volumes and its worth an extra star.
