Different, Inventive but Not Quite Classic
Peter David wrote Hulk for twelve years, I think, and thus is the originator behind much of the layers of Hulk mythology- it shows. This book is great in its portrayal of the green behemoth. The opening sequence is fantastic- quoted in the Amazon review. Hulk walks along the ocean bottom smashing anything that gets in his way- sharks, giant squid, whatever. This Hulk is grim, aggressive and moody. Much more of a smouldering anger than an explosive rage (that comes later).
Peter David's writing is excellent and the characterizations pulled off very well- the story is convoluted and doesn't quite gel, which is a great pity because whilst you read the book the ride is quite intense! There is a lot of Hulk and a little Banner in this book- although the crossover between the two is still blurred. The action is awesome, classic Hulk- this Hulk is a bruiser, a bully and super-confident. This is in stark contrast to the raging powerhouse of the previous Hulk volumes penned by Bruce Jones. Both are great and both recognizable as the same character, however.
Artwork is excellent- suitably moody and evocative. The artwork in the final, London-based, section of the book is unusual and far more impressionistic in feel than the more graphic art in the first sections. A truly wonderful imitation of the Frazetta classic painting `Death Dealer' features- with Hulk on a horse, wielding an axe-fantastic and fun!
Overall I can't recommend this comic book as a classic- it's enjoyable enough and features highly skilled writing and art, but the whole thing doesn't feel right. If you're a dedicated Hulk reader, or just curious, it's a good buy- otherwise you may feel let down. A couple of more chapters to the Island storyline may have changed this. A shame as it is a fun read.
Good, with obvious talent in its production, but ultimately a bit of a let down compared to previous volumes in the series.
sheer fun
I'd agree with the other reviewer in that this can be quite confusing at times and the story does feel a litle rushed towards the end. However, i think this is a good enough trade off for the sheer fun Peter David injects into the story. He clearly relishes writing for the Hulk again and theres rarely a page went by that i didn't have a little chuckle. The Hulk is not a comic i would normally read, but i'd recently read Planet Hulk and thought i should give this a go, as i'm quite keen on Davids work on X-Factor and Spiderman. He knows the character inside and out and uses Hulk in a way that shames Greg Paks 'Planet Hulk'. It does get a litte messy at times but the dialogue and overall story telling are so good that you tend to let it slip.
The last issue collected here features the stunning artwork of Jae Lee, who draws great inspiration from The Hulks comparison to Frankenstiens Monster. Its also and great little story in its own right.
Highly enjoyable.
Great drawings, weird story
I recently started reading comics again and bought "Hulk: Dogs of War". Since I really enjoyed it I decided to buy Tempest Fugit but found it rather disappointing. The drawings were absolutely fantastic but the story just too confusing to be coherent or enjoyable. Hence my rating.
