Excellent multi-function printer.
Unfortunately our Brother DCP-165 multi-function printer developed a fault under guarantee so we replaced it with this model, the DCP-385C.

This printer is very compact, quiet and fairly cheap to run. Build quality appears good, unlike some of it's competitors.

The first thing you notice about this printer is it's paper feed system, it is very unusual in the sense that the paper tray comes out from the FRONT of the printer, and you can load both A4 paper and 150mm x 100mm photo paper at the same time and the paper has to be loaded upside down!! Sounds strange but there is no rear paper feed guide sticking up out the back of this printer.

The software supplied with the Brother is quick and easy to install, it is very basic and simple in operation but why complicate things with over blown printer drivers!!

Onto the printer side of things, for a start this printer is extremely quiet, so much so that you think it is not printing!! Print output quality is good and for a 4 ink system(4 cartridges in total) results on glossy photo paper are quite remarkable, sharp and clear with very good colours, standard print output on standard A4 paper are good with text well defined and sharp. The other bonus with this Brother printer is that the cartridges don't have an annoying chip on them, genuine cartridges are around 6-9 pound each, but you can buy compatibles for around 2-4 each.

The scanner on this device is good and images are nice and sharp, colours are natural and not over saturated, if anything the scanner is slightly slow, but you can't have anything. Copying on the device is simple, with just one press of a button you have a colour copier at you finger tips, copying is quick and print output is good.

The Brother DCP-385c has a card reader built in(CF,SD,XD,SDHC,MMC) and can be used as a stand alone printer, you can view your photo's on the colour LCD screen on the front of the printer and select which photo's you want to print, I do find the LCD screen a little on the small side, but is just about big enough. The printer also has Pict Bridge capabilities, so you can plug your digital camera straight into the usb port on the front of the printer and select the photo's you want to print without the need for a PC.

Overall a good multi-function device at a reasonable price.

Brilliant
Quality of product is brilliant, there is some loading of software but all is clear. I bought it because of the low running costs, that it had a scanner, and it had individual coloured inks. The copy facility(like a photocopier) couldn't be easier to use, and will save me much time and trips out of the house. It seems not to do double sided printing, so I will have to instruct the printer to print only alternate numbered pages if I want to print double sided, but I can live with that.

Easy to set up, inks easy to insert, good preview screen, quieter than my old DCP115C, thats why I bought 2 printers, one as a Christmas present,because the old one "is printing photos in green", and one for myself so I can show off!! If it looks good then generally it is good!
