Product Description

Arm yourself! The 20 year wait is over as Bionic Commando swings back into action! The first true sequel to the classic 1988 Nintendo Entertainment System original, Bionic Commando sees the return of the bionically-enhanced Nathan "R.A.D." Spencer. Time has not been kind to Spencer: five years after his heroic defeat of the Imperials, he has been betrayed by the government he swore to serve, imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit, and sentenced to death.

On the very day of Spencer's execution, terrorists detonate a massive experimental weapon in Ascension City, unleashing an intense earthquake that has turned the city into rubble and wiped out its population. With the terrain in ruins and the city's air defense grid now in the control of a massive terrorist force whose goal remains unclear, the FSA have only one option left - a behind-the-lines assault.

It's the perfect job for a Bionic Commando!

  • Use the bionic arm to swing between towering skyscrapers at breathtaking speed, hook onto distant objects, zip up on hanging girders and choose your own route through the game
  • Gameplay that moves through horizontal and vertical environments - a 3D game that truly uses all three dimensions
  • Full multiplayer mode with rich stat-tracking to check whether you're a true commando or a lowly private
  • Use the power of the bionic arm - and of next-gen physics - to realistically throw massive objects, pummel opponents, whip enemies into the air, or pull the landscape apart
  • Arm yourself with a variety of weapons worthy of a Bionic Commando
  • Starring Mike Patton, the former lead singer of Faith No More, as the voice of Nathan Spencer

A Misunderstood Game4
Bionic Commando is a misunderstood game.
Because it features a third person viewpoint, a lot of people mistook it for a simple third person shooter, but it's much more than that. There were complaints about lack of weapons, lack of ammo, lack of cover, lack of exploration. Well, this isn't a third person shooter, it's a generalized action game in which you ALSO get guns, but where your main weapon is the Bionic Arm.
Some complained also about the controls. Well, I don't know about the Xbox version, but I had no problems at all with the PS3 version. The controls are tight, the arm is very responsive, and you can do some amazing things easily.
Anyone that is still on the fence about the game, give it a try. Unless you really are expecting a "run, gun and take cover" game, you won't be disappointed.
The company that made the game, GRIN, is already shut down, unfortunately. While I didn't find get a chance to play their two other recents releases, Terminator Salvation and Wanted: Weapons of Fate, they did revitalize the Bionic Commando franchise with Bionic Commando Rearmed, and should have continued that trend with Bionic Commando.
This is a very fun game where you swing around various landscapes and pull off some great stunts while killing your enemies with the arm. The guns are just for support, backup, when faced with a bunch of enemies over the corner, you aren't meant to stay hidden in some makeshift cover, you're meant to go to the air, using your arm to escape their bullets, while aiming at them with the shotgun or locking on your homing missiles while you're in free fall. When you start to lose health, swing away and go to places your enemies can't reach, and your health will increase steadily.
Don't go in thinking this is a free roam game. While the arm is amazing and you CAN explore the levels a lot with it, the game is very linear in its progression (but not in the way you defeat your enemies) and it was never meant to be a free roam game. The blue radiation the levels are spattered with is easy to avoid, and it was placed there simply to push you onward towards your goal.
The story in the game starts off slow but reaches a fantastic ending, that divided a lot of players. Not everyone will like it, but it was gutsy of them to do it. Whoever, the ending of the tale was really just the beginning. Unfortunately with GRIN gone and the low sales of this great game, I don't think Capcom will be issuing a sequel.
Bionic Commando is a great fun action game that got shafted by poor reviews. Don't let the expectations of this "next-gen" age where every game must be exactly the same taint your experience with this great game.
