Very impressed
The XL V2 Europe works really well. Tomtom seem to have overcome the screen fixture problems reported elsewhere with their new Easy Port mount and the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver works well. It's worth knowing about the difference between the old traffic receiver (which has a jack plug to connect to the Tomtom) and the new one (which has a mini USB connector to connect to the Tomtom). Note also that you wouldn't be able to use the older style traffic on the newer Tomtom or vice-versa. My experience was that the old receiver worked only very rarely as there always seemed to be reception problems, but the new one works really well - with similar reception to the Garmin that we share at work. Be aware though that when using the device with traffic, there is a power lead to the traffic receiver that is supposed to be mounted on your windscreen and another lead from this to the Tomtom so you do get some trailing lead clutter.
The touchscreen menus are pretty intuitive and the maps and route planning are accurate. Unlike the Garmin (which is always over-optimistic even in light traffic) the Tomtom gives reasonable journey time predictions for fast roads like motorways but tends to over estimate the time needed on country roads. A consequence is a feeling of smug satisfaction on arriving a little ahead of Tomtom initial predictions (they are updated as you travel, of course) instead of the frustration on arriving later than predicted by Garmin.
You can configure what information is actually displayed on the screen including speed, arrival time, distance to destination and current time etc. which is not possible on some satnavs. You can also choose from several mapping colour schemes and the speaker for the voice prompts so it can be 'personalised' to some extent.
I like the V2 XL a lot. The screen is bigger than the regular Tomtom One and it all seems to work very well but is not too expensive. There is no subscription fee for traffic via the RDS-TMC receiver.
Pretty Cool Gadget
New version is quite thin, attachment to winscreen is so nifty - easy to remove and transfer to other cars (no need to buy additional mount!!). Software is good and menu's are easy to use, was able to use straight out of box. Prefer Navman for top down/3D views. Nice little mini USB connectors for charging, connecting to computer and the aerial makes life so much easier (just had mine dangling down on to floor - not even attached to windscreen and was picking up traffic warnings [VW passat]. Would thoroughly recomend
TT One XL Bad Aftersales
Hi,
I bought this unit for a friend of mine, it works ok but trying to get TomTom to honour their "Latest Map Guarantee" proved a nightmare.
When the unit is bought they give you the first 30 days in which if a later map comes out you can update free. It all sounds very good doesn't it.
Well we tried to download the map and it said there were no maps available, when we knew there was.The unit had 8.10 on it the new map was 8.25, there had been an 8.15 in between.
After many exchanges with Tom Tom who wanted to give us a previous version of their current map (8.15). Their explanation was that when the unit was purchased 8.15 was the current map and that was all we were entitled to.
I referred them back to screen shots of their own website where it clearly states that if a newer map becomes available in your first 30 days, you are entitled to the latest map.
Eventually they did honour the guarantee, but I can tell you this if Garmin had a better "Avoid or Detour" feature which Tom Tom does so well, I would never buy another TomTom product again. I have 3 of them so I consider myself qualified to comment!
