Works just like the real thing! The LEGO? TECHNIC Excavator is loaded with realistic details and working functions just like a real Excavator! These include hydraulic actuators that raise and lower the articulated arm! This is for positioning your bucket ready to be lowered wherever you want it. The Excavator comes with an extending and contracting bucket arm , which allows you to really scoop up material and move it wherever you want! The Excavator also comes equipped with a 360-degree rotating cab section enabling you to move the arm to pick up or depisit materials from a static position! The final and most useful feature of the Excavator is its real working and rolling caterpillar tracks which allow the vehicle to move freely and carry it's materials wherever it needs! The Lego Technic Excavator can also be transformed into a tracked dumper to take away all the rubble you've excavated!

Lego Technic Excavator fun
This was a great kit to make. I roped in a little helper to do the actual construction while I read the clear and easily understandable manual and generally managed the project. As the construction went past some peoples bed times it would have been good if I (as project manager) had provided some Tupperware boxes to keep all the carefully sorted bits safe. Luckily everything remained safe on the table until the next day but next time I'll definitely have containers of some sort on hand.
There was a bit of confusion with this kit as it also contains the pieces needed to make some kind of a dump truck (not at the same time as the excavator, instead of!) Once we realised that we didn't need to use all the bits from each bag things got a lot clearer.
It was immediately apparent, once the kit was completed that it would be immensely improved by having the motor kit addition as well, which you need to buy separately. This is the reason I haven't given this Lego excavator top marks. I understand that the motor kit is too expensive to stick in every pack, but using the manual excavator arm control was awkward. The driver who we'd made this for though didn't seem to mind too much!
