Editorial Reviews

About the Author
Allen Carr was an accountant and smoked 100 cigarettes a day until he gave up and wrote this bestselling book. He has built a hugely successful network of stop-smoking clinics across the world and is the author of The Only Way to Stop Smoking, How to Stop Your Child Smoking, The Easy Way to Enjoy Flying and The Easyweigh to Lose Weight. In 2004 Allen published his bestselling autobiography Packing It In (Michael Joseph). He was diagnosed with lung cancer in the summer of 2006 and died in November of the same year. It seems likely that the years he spent curing smokers in smoke-filled sessions at his clinics must have contributed to this illness, but Allen Carr remained positive; 'Given that I am informed that I have cured at least 10 million smokers on a conservative estimation, it's a price worth paying.'

"The object of this book is to get you into the frame of mind in which, instead of the normal method of stopping whereby you start off with the feeling that you are climbing Mount Everest and spend the next few weeks craving a cigarette and envying other smokers, you start right away with a feeling of elation, as if you had been cured of a terrible disease." I was worried5
I was worried that this wouldnt work for me. I have smoked for 5 years, and have tried to stop maybe 4 times for differing lengths of time. I would be proud of days that I went a day without a fag; it showed strength of willpower i suppose.

I read the 1 star reviews about this book, and they confirmed what I felt must be true all along - this must be too good to be true. What I now believe having read the book, and extinguished the final cigarette, is that these people do not want to give up. No book, no program, no person in this world is going to make you stop smoking - except yourself.

So the way in which this book works. Well, as a smoker, you are aware of why you shouldn't smoke; i.e. the disadvantages. Smokers don't stop for these reasons though, otherwise we would all be non-smokers.

What is more interesting, is asking you to think (while smoking a cigarette) why you continue to smoke - i.e. the advantages. I can't list them here, that's what the book does, but as you read, you have a massive sense of realisation sweep over you. it is almost as though the truth about cigarettes becomes obvious.

I write this review, 18 hours after my last cigarette, feeling that I should be tearing my hair out dying for a fag. But instead I am feeling very positive about the next few days and beyond. I would recommend this book not just to people who wish to quit, but to people who smoke. The way in which it is different is that it makes you realise all the positive reasons that a smoker uses to smoke are illusions.

As I say ignore the people who say this book isn't that good, it is certainly worth a try. A book is a book, and as an inanimate object it is not going to prevent you putting a cigarette in your mouth and lighting it. Open your mind to what cigarettes are doing for (not to) you.

Provides a positive push... but is ultimately devoid of 'real' insight2
First thing to point out, I didnt read the book until a long time after I had successfully managed to quit by reading 'The Nicotine Trick'. Curiosity got the better of me to see just why Carr was the de facto smoking guru. From my perspective this book has succeeded mainly from the positive message it instils in the reader and from persistant hammering home of the message. This can and has worked for many, but many aspects of the Easyway method have now been shown as bunk by Chris Holmes' marvelous book. It is definately worth a read, but in my opinion your money would be better spent on 'The Nicotine Trick' or 'Nicotine The Drug That Never Was'. These go further to the root of the problem rather than being mainly motivational (as Easyway is), and help you come out the other side understanding smoking better, and, providing the tools to quit successfully.

Ignore the 1 star givers!!!!5
Read this book in 3 days and quit just like it said on the tin, been 3 weeks now and I already know i'll never smoke another cigarette in my life, and that feels amazing to say. Just like to also say that you MUST have an open positive mind to read this book, believe all that you are going to be told because 99% is true! If you start to disagree (you ARE kidding yourself) or have the opinion or feeling of "this won't work for me", "i'm too CLEVER for this to work on me", or "i knew all this already" (which I promise you don't, you may know some of it but not ALL of it, esp the STRESS/RELAXATION/BOREDOM part, because if you did you wouldn't smoke :0) like reading the 1 star givers posts seemed to have, then this won't work. However, if like me, you desparately want to stop then just give in to the book. Its not hypnotic like some 1 star givers have suggested, its just cold hard facts (a lot of which you will NOT know), and the reason for the repetition is that it is EASY WAY for the brain to store information (reasons for not smoking information in this case). Call it brainwashing if you want, but if it stops you from smoking then surely it HAS to be Positive Brainwashing if ever such thing exists. Allen Carr has made a lot of money from this, but hell he deserves it, he may have prolonged more lives than any top surgeon could ever wish for. READ IT, GIVE IN TO IT, DON'T GIVE UP, STOP.
