Awesome guitar playing but more importantly awesome SONGS
You'd think that this would be all about the shred - with Malmsteen, Slash, Gilbert, Morse, May, Nugent, Batten, Schon and even Edgar Winter contributing to the album one could be forgiven for expecting Carmine Appice to have been talked into ditching vocals entirely and just having ten minute guitar-solo wig-outs instead. Thankfully everybody here has checked their ego at the door and instead made the contribution to the album that was requested from them in order to make it the best album it could be. So we instead have a focus on songs and melody, lyrics and feeling. That's not to say that there aren't any solos on it - far from it. Everyone gets plenty of space to show what they can do with a guitar and of course between them this bunch can do pretty much anything.
The guitar playing on the album is fantastic and particular favorites with me are Paul Gilbert's blistering scattergun solos on album opener Dislocated, and Jennifer Battens almost free-form funk noodling on instrumental Guitar Zeus - Part 1. But you'll have your own favorites - every song is stand-out in it's own right, the guitar players are only adding to that, and that's the point.
A great album.
