What happened to Joe?
Once again, for some reason, Joe has produced another bland album. In fact, in my opinion, all the albums he has done for Sony are equally bland. (It pains me to say this, being a big fan since 1987)
If you are a fan of his first three albums then I wouldn't bother getting this one. If you like anything from the Extremist and beyond then these might be to your liking. Even so, if you are a guitarist, there's nothing here for you. Same old licks, same old improvisation. Musically, this hardly goes beyond the pentatonic and major scale. You would think that Joe would have learnt so much by now and would be eager to get it out, but it just doesn't show. This leads me once again to suspect his deal with Sony.
Either Joe has been out of ideas since Flying In A Blue Dream, or the albums for Sony are contractually intended to be uninteresting, for some reason.
The first three albums were great for the reason that he was playing interesting notes, unusual song structures, and was using unusual scales. This is what distinguished him from others: not HOW he plays, but WHAT he plays.
Maybe he has run out of ideas, but I refuse to believe that...
I will return this album because it is not worthy of sitting next to the first three albums in my collections.
Really sorry, Joe...
Lose the "band feel" thing, it all went down hill since then. Get the drum machine and multitrack out, and blow us away!
A bit flat
I normally like Joe, but I found this album a bit flat. Perhaps it was the production, or the band was suffering from a hangover.
I suspect that Joe based "Crowd Chant" on Deep Purple's "Black Night" live singalong after his stint with DP.
my favorite joe satriani cd
i think that his latest cd is joe satriani's best work and it is even better than surfing with the alien and the extremist which both of those were great too. the best song on this cd is a cool new way. joe really had great wah-wah on this cd. i highly recommend this cd and i would recommend you to get this with joe satriani's self titled album. joe satriani rules.
