Up From The Ashes for 2008
There is a common theme with ageing rockers. Take Metallica, for example, where experimentation and a need to be seen to progress on every release is replaced at a certain age (mid 50s?) with the grim realisation that doing what you were good at when you were most successful is actually what people like to hear (albeit in a contemporary context). This is clearly in this vein and, thankfully, is a massive and confident return to form.
Stylistically where it sits musically is as an updated `Up From The Ashes', with a bigger bottom end and slightly huskier vocals in parts. Interestingly, the cover, depicting the rising phoenix, also references back to the similarly themed artwork on `Up From The Ashes'.
This has all the great Dokken hallmarks - melody, groove, sincerity and that catchiness that has you humming the choruses after only one listen. If you liked `Up from the Ashes' you will love this.
somthing about dokken i can't get hold of!
Dokken like other bands of that era where all thrown into the mix of the glam metal category but while those spent so much time bleaching their hair and chasing chicks in preferrence to getting their act together to perform as a rock band Dokken are one of the few that had the chops and the looks of course to survive what everything else threw at them boasting a number of good albums on the way like Tooth and Nail etc.
But this new one minus guitarist George Lynch is a return to form considering how Classic rock has made a return to the UK charts with both Good to Be Bad reaching no.7 and Def Leppards latest effort at number 10 respectivley since Lightning Strikes again is full of pure rock and roll with the unmistakable vocals of Don Dokken adding much needed sensitivity to some of the albums brigter moments LIKE Heart of Stone and standing on the outside which blends Don's idiosyncratic vocals alongside the guitar work of Jon Levin who fills the boots of george Lynch very well while choosing not to show boat but puts in his all to the album itself without much fuss.
Welcome back DOKKEN!
DOKKEN STRIKE AGAIN AT THERE VERY BEST
Dokken is one of the bands that define the Hard Rock and Metal genre in the 80's. On the heels of such masterpiece records as "Tooth And Nail", "Under Lock & Key" and "Back For The Attack" the band has created an unique style made of heavy riffing and memorable vocal lines and melodies. After the band's split in 1989, Dokken reunited with the release of "Dysfunctional" in 1995 and since then have been a stable presence in the Hard Rock and Metal world.this album is a classic.
Lightning Strikes Again is Dokken's 10th studio album and, from the title already, which echoes one of the band's classic song off "Under Lock & Key", marks a true and definite return to the classic sound of the heydays
