Customer Reviews
Great concept let down slightly by occasional poor vocals
Bassinvaders are a conglomerate of metal bass players led by Marcus Grosskopf from Helloween, with Peavy Wagner from Rage, Tom Angelripper from Sodom and Schmier from Destruction helping out. The concept is great, the bass playing of course exemplary (no "guitars" allowed) so the riffs and solo's are all played on various basses, and there a fair good few guest soloists ranging from Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats! to Dennis Ward from Pink Cream 69, who if I may beg his pardon I've never heard of.
Unfortunately the tracks where the bassists take on lead vocals are a bit weak, possibly because with so much bass and drum around, the melody has to sometimes take a back seat and the rhythm is more important. With this in mind, the album for me doesn't really take off until track 6 (of 14)when Apollo Papathenasia takes his turn at the mike and things perk up. This track is called Empty Memories and is a killer track in it's own right and would grace many other albums.
That said I have now listended to the album three times straight through and it definitely grows on you. In many ways it is reminiscent of avant guard jazz mixed with double bass drum metal mayhem. Jazz-metal anyone?
The kicker though is the dedication to John Entwhistle against whom all other bass players must be judged...and invariably found wanting, but this lot make a great stab at it and I think it comes off.
