Blown Away!
I first heard this band on one of the satellite rock channels, the track was Shockwave. I have to admit I had been looking for a band like this for ages (I grew up with metal in the 80's). I love killer hooks & riffs, pounding bass lines, and great vocals (I hate emo like screaming that today's bands seem to pound out!). The fact that these guys are a bunch of teenagers is just odd, and that Gabriel their lead singer and guitarist is just 15, is bonkers. They play like they have been together for donkeys and have musical maturity well beyond their years! They are a very tight outfit.
As sounds go you can take a bit of Iron Maiden, Helloween, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica and Megadeth (sorry to appear so obvious!). This band sound like they should have been around 20 years ago, but the production is so solid, crisp and slick. Yeap the lyrics are clichéd beyond belief, but it doesn't matter, cos these guys, just plain rock and rock hard. Superb stuff.
Stand out songs - Shockwave, Warriors of Time, Let Me, Show Me the Way, Hit the Lights (yes, a Metallica Cover!), Black Abyss, Light From Above and Black Widow. Hell, there's not a bad one on there to be honest.
This is an immense album.
I'll make a prediction with some caveats - barring them breaking up or suffering from some serious writers block - these guys will be one of the best metal bands for many years to come. I'll save my prediction that they will become one the greatest metal acts of all time till the second album :-)
They're just kids! KIDS?
This is a strange one. I heard the album for the first time on a listening post in a record store and thought that the mighty metal sound was spoilt a bit by the occasionally scratchy vocals. I thought that this sounded like someone whose voice has only just broken. You know, not quite singing in the melodic higher octaves like RJ Dio, and not shouty/gruff enough to be a Scandinavian band. I couldn't quite get my head around it. And now I find it's a 15 year old kid who is doing the honours. Blimey o'Reilly! Who'd have thought it?
So it's important to get any pre-conceived ideas out of your heads about whether or not kids can rock or not, because this lot certainly can. I suppose a lot of the credit has to go to the producer Johnny K, who has built a huge sounding album here, that emphasises the frighteningly good guitar work and pounding rhythms. Sure the lyrics are cliched, and quite frankly daft in some cases - yeah you're 15 and you want to "live fast die young" . No you don't, at least not the second bit, and eventually the album proves to be a couple of quality songs short of 5 stars but even so, this is an astonishing debut!
Incredibly Metal
This band have got the potentional to have a major impact upon 2008 and the entire metal scene, and with the lead singer being just 15, it was very unexpected!
I saw black tide at the brixton academy supporting avenged sevenfold, and i was blown away by them, they were so professional for a support band.
and so, i thought id buy the album, and it wasnt a dissapointment at all!
from the opening chords of 'Shockwave' to the closer 'Light from above',i was blown away.
I highly recommend you buy this album!
