gets better with age5
I remember buying this album on LP when it came out in 1989. I was blown away at the time and now, hearing it for the first time on CD, it's like hearing it for the first time again. Only better! The packaging is glossy and beautifully designed - I particularly like the way the album sleeve has been re-designed, making it much stronger visually than the original. By 1989 Whitesnake had grown into a monster and criticism of Steve Vai's playing is not altogether unjustified. However, he's an awesome guitarist and really brings this album to life. The 'Vai Voltage' mix of Fool For Your Loving is included, and this is about as self-indulgent as he gets! The songs are better than I remembered, especially the title track and Sailing Ships. The DVD is fantastic, with all three promo vids and two live tracks from Donington 1990. The band burn the stage up with their energy and give a blistering performance, albeit slightly too fast! But it's great to see it for the first time and I'm pleased that there is a 'To Be Continued' caption at the end. Perhaps not as heavy as the previous album, Slip of the Tongue is, never the less, a dynamic and exciting listening experience and this anniversary package will not disappoint. Well, I was blown away by it anyway!

last great album before grunge wiped out the old guard5
Slip of the tongue was a brilliant album in more ways than one bolstered by the additions of bonus tracks and promo video's and live performances which can paper over tightly the criticisms leveled at it during its release by the press and some fans since yes it tried a little too hard to emulate the success of 1987 but failed kind of to do so despite being another top selling platinum album and the choice of having Steve Vai in the line up was questionable but hey why pay attention to the nay sayers when you can judge for yourself.

The tracks from the original album are no doubt that its dominated by the presence of Vai and his guitar itself especially on the so-so remake of "Fool For Your Loving" not bad but wether the remake of 1987 song from Saints and Sinners worked for the hit album of the same year before Slip of the tongue but doesn't for this one but the qualities and OTT moments from the "Slip of the tongue", "Judgement day" and "Now youre gone" do make up for it even the song "Kitten's got claws" no doubt hints at the divorce proceedings between Mr Coverdale and the star of the whitesnake video's Mrs Tawny Kitean whilst the slow burning "Sailing Ships" is a lovely song.

Maybe too polished for hardcore snake fans but who can find it in their hearts not to purchase it and feel blown over by the Cov's vox.
