Goodnight And Thank You For The Music.5
Goodbye to the Strap. It is sad to see such a great band go. Wonderfully drunken and dishevelled Aiden Moffatt spoke to a certain type of person in bedsit land. The type of guy who obsessed about that girl who was always just out of reach and sought solice in a can of super strenght lager.

Melodic, beautiful and dark. Arab Strap will be sorely missed.

It's A Heartache...5
The second release in a year for the Strap, but this time a much sadder affair - the farewell collection. It plays more like an anti-greatest hits collection more than anything else though, offering a chance to listen to the sound of one of the most unique bands of the 90's establishing themselves as the leading purveyors of bleak, yet honest and heartfelt, story telling.

Mixed in among the alternate versions and b-sides are a single from each album (except Elephant Shoe) including their first classic single 'The First Big Weekend', along with the perfect 'Shy Retirer' from Monday at the Hug and Pint. There is plenty to get excited about though, the original version of Islands is very different to the album version but still works well, the new live version of 'Blood' is far and away the best it's ever sounded.

'Where We Left Our Love' is one of the best set of lyrics Aiden's even written and 'The Girl I Loved Before I Fucked' are definitely the most offensive. 'Oxytocin' really sounds like two guys discovering that they have a found a new sound that is truly theirs. There are two hidden tracks which play directly after the anthemic 'There is No Ending'; first a fantastic cover is 'It's A Heartache' and then the most amusing (and possibly catchiest) song on the CD; 'Bon Voyage' a song Aiden made for Malcolm when he moved away, just makes me wish my friends were this creative...

Probably not the best place to start if you're new to Arab Strap, but if you feel like you've been down the pub with them a few times already, this will help jog the guilty memories of last night back into clarity.

The CD booklet also has some great song notes from Aiden.

A good place to start4
An apt title for this compilation which covers the Scottish miserablists 10 year career. Not a Greatest Hits package, they really didn't have any, but an eclectic stroll thought there back catalogue. Mixing dance, folk and rock with lyrics that pick at the scabs of human relationships with a dark dry humour. This is strangely uplifting despite the misery.

Whether it be the post-club 'First Big Weekend' or the barstool musing of 'Shy Retirer' there should be something here to pique your interest
