Editorial Reviews

CD Description
David Gedge's indie stalwarts seem to have entirely recaptured the fury of their earlier records with this, their eighth LP (and their second after re-forming in 2004). Gedge's songwriting has always been imbued with bitterness towards theopposite sex, but the band's previous release (2005's 'TakeFountain') and preceding records under the Cinerama monikersaw them giving way to lighter sentiments. Normal service is resumed on 'El Rey', though, with songs such as 'Don't Take Me Home Until I'm Drunk' and 'Boo Boo' displaying their re-captured vigour. Produced by the legendary Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Joanna Newsom) for the first time since 1993's 'Seamonsters', 'El Rey' features the single 'The Thing I Like Best About Him Is His Girlfriend'.

Customer Reviews

Once again, quality from The Weddoes5
5 star once again! Yes, it's not the same sound as appeared on Tommy, Bizarro or George Best, but the Wedding Present have always evolved and subsequent albums such as Seamonsters, Take Fountain, Saturnalia etc have all had their own unique sound. El Rey is no different in that respect. The one thing that links every album is Gedge's voice and as ever, those classic opening lines are all there. Personal favourite so far, 'Don't Take Me Home Until I'm Drunk'. For any Wedding Present fan, buy it and you won't be disappointed. 'Oh why do you... catch my eye then.. turn away...'!

Great stuff!5
I just dont know how The Wedding Present never really hit the big time. This album proves that Gedges songs are better than anything knocking about the charts today. Have you heard Scouting for Girls?? RRRRRRUBISH!!!
The only bad point is the daft start to 'girlfriend'. Dont see the point to it. Its a bit like some of the endings on Take Fountain. They go on a bit but the songs themselves are magic.

A fine blend of 20 years of music5
On first listening to this album, you can see where gedge has responded to regualr calls of reverting back to the old 'jingley-jangley' style that first propelled the wedding repsent onto the music scene. This new album is a fine blend of george best style guitars, the darkness of seamonster and the fun vocals of the newer albums. Definetly recommend this to all new and old wedding present fans but i think this is probably the swan-song album from gedge, who will no doubt turn his hand to music producing and defining new music style for up and coming bands.
