Professor David Clutterbuck, Clutterbuck Associates
"This book fills an important gap in the coaching literature. Psychometric data figures increasingly in the background materials coachees bring to the learning alliance and the book provides valuable guidance on how to make safe, effective use of a wide range of instruments."

“this book fills an important gap in the coaching literature. psychometric data figures increasingly in the background materials coachees bring to the learning alliance and the book provides valuable guidance on how to make safe, effective use of a wide range of instruments.”

“executive coaches are increasingly aware that our observations are invariably biased, distorted and selective. while that is part of the charm and power of coaching, this textbook is invaluable in balancing our sometimes overly subjective perception.”

“this book reflects both the spirit of the association for coaching and the diversity we embrace. through its academic bias, our intention is to provide a number of instruments and theories to apply in practice, as the roll of psychometrics in coaching continues to grow.”

A great overview of psychometric tools that can be used in coaching
This book is an excellent outline of well known (like MBTI, OPQ and Firo B) and not so well known (such as CTT, Saville Consulting Wave or the MTQ48) psychometric questionnaires and how they can be specifically related to coaching. And while there may be some information about a few of the tools available elsewhere it is unique in bringing them altogether, and it is broad-based reflecting the work of many different psychometric test providers.
The book is written by experienced practitioners in their field, in some cases those who developed the tools. It provides relevant theory and backgrounds, is well resaeserched and scholarly in nature and very readable. Psychometrics in Coaching brings together some of the most-up-to-date research and feedback and the best of more established tools such as the use of archetypes based on Jung's work and new tools like that related to positive psychology (VIA). In effect it provides tasters of 15 different tools in a strongly ethical framework which emphasises the need for proper coach training to use these tools and also gives advice re the best feedback styles, putting to bed the feedback sandwich for once and for all!
I like the fact that there is an emphasis in every chapter on the coach first using the questionnaires on themself and understanding their own strengths and areas for development. The authors point out that having this knowledge will improve the coach's capacity to understand how difference in their relative strengths might impact on the coaching relationship. The authors make clear the circumstances when each tool might be helpful and also, in the general chapters, there is an emphasis on appropriateness about the use of a tool at all. For example the editor, Jonathan Passmore, writes that the coach should always be asking "how will this instrument help my coachee to move towards their goals?"
As a coach myself I found myself delving on the internet as I read it looking at potentially training in quite a few of the tools discussed! And I particularly liked the Firo B chapter which is full of examples where it had been successfully applied to coaching. If I have any suggestions I would have liked a diagram for the LSI chapter and some links to where training/tests were available in the cases of a couple of the less well known tools featured. Overall I think the book is a really helpful tool for coaches, coachees, HR professionals and managers and is a must for the bookshelf for those who want to use psychometrics and have a broader range to choose from and then choose appropriately.
