Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In a nutshell:
Sonic the Hedgehog is going back to basics with a straight up 3D race game that ditches all the guns, vehicles and hangers-on from the more recent games and concentrates on pure speed and platform action.

The lowdown:
The blue speedster has come a long way since the Mega Drive days, a bit too far some would say - since many of his more recent games bear little relation to his original platform antics. This looks a lot more like the old games though (even though it's got a weird Arabian Nights back story) as you simply move left and right with the Wii Remote and use the '2' button to jump. You can also reverse up by tilting the remote and do a homing attack on enemies by lifting the controller up vertically, but that and a slowly filling turbo boost bar is as complicated as things get. The graphics though are anything but basic and some of the best yet seen on the Wii, with a great sense of speed that's vital to any good Sonic game.

Most exciting moment:
Despite the storyline taking place in a dream world based on the Arabian Nights the game doesn't exactly stick close to the original text. One of the best levels is filled with dinosaurs and has you outrunning a series of giant lizards before getting catapulted through a waterfall and enjoying a break neck white water rapids run on the back of a log.

Since you ask:
Although Sonic is the only playable character in the game, according to Sega another of his friends will feature in the game, but portrayed in "a different light". Archenemy Dr Robotnik/Eggman is also promised to make an appearance in some form.

The bottom line:
Sonic returns to his roots in his best looking 3D game for ages.-HARRISON DENT

A massive step in the right direction for Sonic

Manufacturer's Description:
Developed by SEGA Studios, Sonic and the Secret Rings stars the Blue dude with the 'tude on his first solo adventure since the original Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991. This intense and exciting action game takes advantage of the innovative Wii controller as Sonic combines his trademark high-speed action with easy to play controls to offer a brand new experience.

Sonic's new adventure unfolds from a storybook of the classic tale, Arabian Nights, the last several pages from the book have gone missing, and it's up to Sonic to re-create the story. The vibrant environments are filled with brightly coloured mosaic tiles, glistening oases, swaying palm trees, and crumbling stone columns. Sonic activates specific areas in the prismatic environment to pull off new tricks and stunts, in addition to interacting head-on with various obstacles by jumping, dodging, and dashing.

Gamers can use the Wii controller to steer Sonic and experience an untapped freedom in gameplay and control. Hold the controller horizontally with two hands and tilt left and right to steer Sonic on different paths and manoeuvre deftly from obstacles and enemies. Continue to tilt and fling forward to dash-attack ground and air enemies and to break down barriers. In addition to the main game is an array of unique controller-focused mini-games which make Sonic and the Secret Rings fun to play alone or as a multiplayer game with friends. Get ready for a refreshing adventure that puts you on the forefront of gaming.

Really good fun4
I got this game when i bought my wii. It's set out in stages, unlike the last sonic game i played. you complete the missions to complete the story - a really nice way to play i have found.
The game makes good use of the wii's interactivity.
The only let down is the multiplayer mode, you can only play multi player in the party games included, not on the actual game.

very poor1
almost impossible to play this game, could not get sonic to go anywhere, very frustrating for younger children a waist of money don,t buy

Sonic and the Secret Rings4
This was my first Wii game and it's actually pretty good. On one of the levels you have to escape from dinosaurs, and on another level you get to go on a magic carpet. The graphics are very good, too. But when Sonic runs, he starts going slow, and it takes about 10 seconds just to get Sonic at full speed. In every other Sonic game I've played, Sonic runs at his full speed immediately. And Story Mode is like a comic, instead of having cutscences. (But that doesn't really bother me.) Also, some of the levels are quite hard, and start to get really frustrating. A bit more frustrating than it should be. But, overall, I think this is a really good game, and a must-have for Sonic fans. Anyway, I'm going to go and play it now, bye!
