Amazon.co.uk Review

Video game adaptations of big movies, particularly kid's movies, tend to get a lot of flak from more hardcore gamers - and not without some justification. Not offering anything original in terms of gameplay is one thing but they're usually quite shoddily made and with little real connection to the movie they're supposed to be based on. Shrek The Third won't be winning any video game awards for innovation but it does at least look and sound like the film and is unlikely to disappoint anyone who simply wants to relive it from the comfort of their own joypad.

In predictable fashion the game is a third person action adventure in which you get to control Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Princess Fiona, Arthur and Sleeping Beauty. Each has their own subtle differences, from Puss n' Boot's double jump to Sleeping Beauty's guide ability, but combat always comes down to just mashing the attack button as rapidly as possible. Everyone also has their own special move as well, from Fiona's flying kick to Puss n' Boot's "cute puss" move.

Another inevitable aspect of the game is a series of mini-games, but most are actually quite good, particularly Castle Capture where you have to smash down an opponent's walls and Ships Ahoy where you have to defend a beach from invading pirates. All can be played with a friend outside the game, which is more than can be said of the main story mode which is sadly single player only. The graphics are decent though and everyone looks like their movie selves, even if the celebrity impersonators don't sound like them. As a video game it's a fairly average affair all round, but as a marketing tie-in it succeeds with flying colours.

Manufacturer's Description
In Shrek the Third, players adventure as Shrek and his friends to save Far Far Away in a hilariously twisted fairy tale from the movie and beyond. Fans play as their favourite heroes from the film: Shrek, Donkey, Puss-in-Boots, Fiona, Fiona's rebellious cousin Arthur and her fellow fairy tale heroine Sleeping Beauty. The game takes players on an epic journey through the worlds of Far Far Away after Prince Charming storms the city with an army of villains in order to seize the throne. Players are challenged to rescue pals, face off against Charming's henchmen, gather collectibles, test their gaming skills in numerous boss fights and engage in various single-player and multiplayer mini-games.

Great for a 4 year old3
I have a four year old son who is still mastering the controls of the Wii. The usual games that you can get for practising the Wii have boring graphics and he can't relate to them. However, with Shrek he totally loved playing it because the contols were easy and he loved being the knight and waving his sword around. If you are looking to get this for a teenager or adult then the other comments are correct. However, if you are wanting this as something you can play together with a toddler (my son enjoyed holding the controler and I held the Nunchuck for stearing) then I found it perfect. I haven't found a four year old that doesn't like Shrek and some of the jokes in it can be shared with all ages. I think that the voices are fine and do sound like the originals, especially Donkey. My son particularly enjoyed the fact that you are not always playing the same character. It was also nice to enjoy a game where we didn't have to download a walkthrough because it was easy enough to play without one!

I wish this game would go Far-Far Away1

The Shrek franchise is beloved and given its source material there is the potential to be quite a funny, enjoyable and entertaining video game. Unfortunatey this is not the case and this game, like most released based on a movie this is a shameless cashin.

Quite literally everything about this game is substandard, be it the terrible voice overs which arent even the cast of the movie (barring John Cleese), the short duration, the controls, the shoddy frame rate or the fact that its so basic that even my daughter (7) found it repetetive and boring (not to mention the "why doesnt it sound like Shrek,Donkey etc?" questions).

For what its worth the game has 20 levels with each level having around 3-5 quests in them. Its all very linear though and is just a matter of relentless and finger killing button mashing.

Pro's
Its shrek

Cons:
Shoddy voice over impersonations of the Shrek cast
Last gen Graphics
Slow down when muultiple characters get on screen
Short Duration
Nothing but button mashing (may strain young fingers)
No Co-Op play

If you are desperate for a Shrek fix i'd opt for Shrek 2 on the original Xbox. It is a better game and has 2 player co-op mode which improves upon the gameplay greatly, otherwise avoid this.

absolute joke2
this game is a disgrace, i had played it for about 4 hours when the credits came on saying it was finished. £24.99 for a 4 hour game is terrible. i would not recommend this game. the game play was fun and the graphics where not bad but the lenght is the thing that lets the game down.
