A Great Game, Let Down By Variable Quality
I don't think I have ever played a game with such a variable standard of graphic quality. At its best, the graphics are very good indeed. The trouble is.....that standard is not maintained throughout, and one moment you can be playing a scene with really high quality, only to enter another room and find the detail of resolution has become rather poor.
Which is a pity, as The Suffering is actually a superb game.....let down primarily by that lack of attention to consistent standards in the graphics.
The game itself is actually great fun to play. I take all the stuff about it being 'disturbing' with a pinch of salt. Somehow I can't see myself putting a hatchet through the mother-in-law's head and claiming this game incited me. It's a game....fer crying out loud ! People who can't cope should stick to Sim City.
One of the other reviews describes the game as a 'third person' shooter. I'd like to correct that....as there is actually a toggle between third person and first person. You CAN play the entire game in first person mode if you want to !
Overall, I'd say that this is another of those games that is never going to match the standards of Far Cry, Or Half Life 2, or Doom 3, but is never the less just sheer fun to play. It certainly has a high scare factor...which I'd rate above that of the Silent Hill games.
At the end of the day...the most important factor of any game is not whether it has the latest super-wizzo graphics, the best AI in the world, or can make your blood curdle at 20 paces. It is that factor that finds you still playing it at 3.30 in the morning when you have to go to work that day. This game has that factor.
Very impressed after only an hour
I must admit, I like "The Suffering" ALOT. I'm a great fan of the TPS horror genre and the Silent Hill series in particular. I can't yet say whether this game is as scary as SH but already it's given me goosebumps.
The graphics are fantastic and the game is unbelievably atmospheric. Many gamers will also be pleased to know that you don't need a top of the range PC to run this game smoothly. I have relatively average specs and the game runs like a dream (Athlon XP 1700+ 512MB RAM)
The controls are also very simple to get used to and there aren't too many in-game options to confuse you. People of a weak disposition probably wouldn't appreciate this game because it does use alot of coarse language and it is very bloody. However, if you have an open mind and would like to play a game which is just a little bit different from most TPS', then I would definately recommend it to you.
The basic outline of the game is the following:
You have just been transfered to a prison on an island off the Maryland coast. The other prisoners start to divulge in irrelevant discourse amongst themselves and suddenly the electricity starts to fail and the guards and inmates all meet very gruesome deaths at the hands of various malevolent and deformed creatures who make a dramatic entrance through the prison ceiling. From that point on, it's all about you staying alive by any and all means necessary.
A very good game
The Suffering is a third person shooter of the horror genre. It is similar in many ways to the Silent Hill series. The setting is Carnate Prison. You play a newly arrived prisoner with the name of Torque. After a good movie intro all the lights go out in the prison. What follows is a scary journey through both interior and exterior levels including the prison itself, an asylum, a lighthouse and other excellently devised levels. Your first weapon is a crowbar but you soon find pistols, shotguns etc. The emplaced machine guns also turn up regurlarly and are usually next to mass spawn points which is good fun. The control and camera system are excellent. This is definately a good buy and is great fun. It can be disturbing in places and there is alot of swearing from the ingame characters. There are three possible endings based on your actions.
