If you want to start running - start here
This book got me ( a flabby 35 year old who hadn't exercised for about 10 years) running 5 years ago and it is still the book I turn to when in need of inspiration or advice.
Clearly written in a style guaranteed not to put off the beginner while providing enough for those who have been running for a while. It covers everything you need to know (plus lots more) on training plans, exercising, warm ups, injuries and gear.
Why only 4 stars? Because this second edition is fatter than the first without seeming to add anything - feels like it needs a training regime!
Fine as far as it goes
Bob Glover & co have written a book that is easy to read, well organized, sensible, avoids complicated theories, doesn't make you feel small (although I baulked at having to do 40-odd press-ups in a minute to qualify as reasonably fit). However, it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know - I'm no great runner, but after two years of beating around the local tracks, most of what he covered was known to me, mostly from reading running mags and common sense. If you want to avoid having to buy expensive mags over a period of time and need to know the basics that will get you running 30 minutes reasonably quickly without making too many silly mistakes, buy his book. If you're able to compete in a 3-mile race or more already, this book, whilst extremely well done, may not teach you much. I'm off to buy The Competitive Runner - if it's anything like this book, I needn't feel too intimidated and I'm sure to learn a great many things I didn't know. One last quibble - no diagrams on the stretching exercises and perhaps not enough suggested training schedules.
Excellent for the first timer or the expert
A very comprehensive book that covers all aspects of running. From how to start out in the running game, just to get fit (or fitter), to how to train for a marathon.
While it is an american book, this fact doesn't detract from the wealth of information it contains on just about everything you need to know - regardless of where you live. It covers what clothing to wear, how to buy the correct shoes, the right diet, how to stay healthy, tackling injuries, and how to prepare for your first race (or fun run!).
I've read a few books on running and this is one I keep dipping into. It is an excellent beginners guide and a very useful reference.
