If you want to start running - start here
This book got me ( a flabby 35 year old who hadn't exercised for about 10 years) running 5 years ago and it is still the book I turn to when in need of inspiration or advice.
Clearly written in a style guaranteed not to put off the beginner while providing enough for those who have been running for a while. It covers everything you need to know (plus lots more) on training plans, exercising, warm ups, injuries and gear.
Why only 4 stars? Because this second edition is fatter than the first without seeming to add anything - feels like it needs a training regime!
If you buy one book on running, make this it!
This book turned me from a 20 minutes-at-a-time jogger to a 15 mile-a-week runner. Lots of advice on cross-training & an introduction to the more "spiritual" aspects of running. Pretty much jargon-free & written for (and by) real people! A book for your whole self, not just the running part.
plenty of suggestions how to improve your running
Great book! I have been running for a year and up to recently I doubted whether reading any book on running made any sense. I had good shoes and conviction that my common sense how to run and what to avoid was enough. Now I see many mistakes I made (e.g. bad sport drinks) and many things I was not aware of (all things with racing). This very well written book (by the person who spent tens of years on teaching how to run) has increased enormously my awareness of running related issues and gave me a lot of very useful suggestions how to improve my training, diet, how to reconcile running, job and family time demands, how to tackle the dangers like dogs, why and whether to race, and many others. All possible questions are asked and answered here.
