Album Description
As a tribute to the late great radio presenter Alistair Cooke,(and an excuse to release some classic 30’s jazz legends captured live!) AVID Entertainment’s latest release captures the urbane and relaxed broadcaster in a somewhat uncharacteristic chaotic environment of a live jazz jam session! Remastered to AVID’s usual high standards our sessions find Mr Cooke acting as compere, and often struggling to be heard above the sound of such legendary jazz men as Sidney Bechet, Bud Freeman, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Mezz Mezzrow, Harry James, Teddy Wilson and many more all performing in the presence of jazz legend WC Handy who is introduced at one point in the proceedings (there follows a blistering version of Handy’s St Louis Blues with a Hot Lips Page taking it home!) So, we present two great jam sessions, one chaotic from the St Regis Hotel in 1938 and the other a more sedate affair with Mr Cooke audibly in more control from the BBC Building on 57th Street in New York, brought together by Alistair Cooke’s love of jazz and affinity to the players and as the great man remarked at closing, we shall never see their like again.
