Fun, fun, and then more fun
First of all, to whoever is new to the game franchise that is Guitar Hero: the idea is to follow on-screen, color-coded "instructions" to hit buttons on a guitar-shaped controller in time with the music. The result is the feeling or indeed illusion of being on a stage rocking along to great songs and being loved by a crowd as if you really were a rock star. Now, provided you can really settle for the virtual experience/illusion this game has to offer, carry on - if however you think it sounds lame and the real thing is way better, by all means, buy a real guitar and start taking lessons right away. You might want to consider my next sentence first though.
This game, through its various difficulty settings, offers the chance to people with little or no talent or music ear or skills to feel as if they really are playing their favorite songs. Even on the higher game difficulties, where you're required to hit the "guitar" fret buttons and "strum" as many times as there are notes in the actual song, you still, strictly speaking, are not really playing the song. Of course the game does offer a big challenge towards the end, and the "expert" difficulty takes a lot of practice to master, but it's still a lot easier than spending 10+ years mastering the same songs on a real guitar. And even then, chances of stardom and gigs all over the world are next to nil (unless you're the next Jimmy Hendrix and you just don't know it yet - but for the rest of us...)
So, all in all, there's lots of fun to be had in this game, playing pretend-guitar on plastic toys, closing your eyes and imagining you're really as the title suggests, a legend of rock. The game is equally as fun with a friend playing along (or against) with you, and although the presentation and visuals of this game could have been a lot better, its song lineup and overall fun factor are so high, that I'll let it slide.
Comparing it to other Guitar Hero titles, it's a definite step up from the previous games, and probably - as far as the song list goes - better than the recent Guitar Hero 5 game as well. It sort of pales in comparison to Guitar Hero World Tour though, which I believe is the best of the franchise so far. Still, GHIII is a great game, and I easily recommend it to GH fans and newcomers alike.
Still the best!!
The best GH game of them all!!Ive played all the GH games and this still stands out as the best for me. I'm no expert player but have finished the game on hard and was well happy with that. This is the hardest of all the GH games tbh. All the others have become easier and easier. If you can master this one you can play any of them.
The track list has a wide range of tastes and should suit most people. The guitar is quite strong, a friend of mine has had the game for over a year and it still works fine, unlike the GH world tour guitar which only lasted about 2 months for me
Guitar Hero Rocks!
Ok, I was already a big fan of the series (as I am of the Rock Band series as well btw), but GH3 had to be added to my collection. This one has got arguably the best song list of all of these type of games. Big difference with the later editions of GH and RB are the battles. They're fun, but can be hard. I am yet to beat Slash on Expert...
Only let down (and this is something that was improved on from Guitar Hero World Tour onwards) is that you need to unlock all the songs at every different difficulty. I started on Expert and got stuck on the Slash battle, but cannot give that a go on Hard until I play every other song (that I had already completed on Expert) on Hard-level as well. Bit annoying....
But all in all a very fun game!
