Great quality slider phone5
If you like the idea of a good-looking LG phone, such as the Prada or the Viewty, but you're not sure about the limited functionality (Prada) or reliance on touch screen technology (Viewty), the Venus could be for you.

It's a slider phone which also has a touch screen. Therefore you have the best of both worlds. Only the bottom third of the screen is touch sensitive, and it features LG's Interactpad technology. This means that the `buttons' available on the pad change according to what you're doing. If you're in camera mode, you get capture, zoom and settings controls, if you're sending a message, you get Insert and Send buttons and so on. You can also assign shortcuts to phone features in this area when the phone is in idle mode.

The Interactpad is responsive to your touch and the screen also vibrates to confirm that you have pressed hard enough. It works well, there is the occasionally mis-press if you don't have particularly skinny fingers but overall it's very comfortable to use.

Slide the phone up and the keypad underneath is completely flat with buttons just about big enough which work as well as the touch screen. The slider has a smooth, solid action, but the totally flat surface of the phone's screen means there isn't an ideal place to push on to work the slider. You soon get used to pushing from top or bottom, though.

The phone is well designed in black and chrome. It isn't the lightest but it has an overall solid feel which is no bad thing. It fits comfortably in your hand and is small and slim enough to slip into your pocket with no fuss. The screen is glossy and bright (so naturally it gets covered in fingerprints very easily) and the back is slightly rubberized so it doesn't slide around on a desk and doesn't scratch. The camera lense is on the back and can be used without having to work the slider. There's a phone button, volume control and MP3 player button all on the sides of the handset. You get a soft fabric case included in the box, which offers the phone further protection.

The KF600 is well-featured with all the usual tools such as calendar, calculator, memo, unit convertor, MP3 player, FM radio, web browser, etc. The camera is 3 Megapixel and takes decent, if not stunning, photographs. There is autofocus and a bright flash. Shutter lag is pretty long so make sure your subjects stand still! Video is also catered for, although sadly not to VGA (640x480) level. Your photos can be edited on the phone using the built-in software, which is surprisingly powerful.

Call quality and sound generally is good. The speakers on the phone do an acceptable job of pumping out music and the included headphones are good enough, if a little quiet. The phone supports MicroSD cards, and you'll need one as built-in memory is only 20MB. No card is supplied, but they are very cheap to pick up.

Using the phone is simple, the menu system is well laid-out and I have barely even looked at the manual as everything is intuitive. T9 predictive text is reliable and using the keypad rather than a touch screen makes writing messages quicker and easier. There is voice dialling for your contacts, and message-wise text, MMS and e-mail (with attachments) are all supported.

Battery life is really a bit average. If you only make a few calls, don't use the web browser much and largely leave the camera alone, you will get a good four or so days out of it. This can drop down to a couple of days if you use the phone at a more regular level. It's certainly tolerable, and not surprising in a phone of its type, but something to bear in mind if you use your phone a lot.

I can happily recommend the Venus, it's got good looks, is well featured and is easy to use. The Interactpad is one of the better examples of touch screen technology and the slider works well. The camera is good rather than great and battery life could maybe be a little better, but these issues are far outweighed by all of the phone's good points.

And on top of all that it comes in one of the best boxes I've ever seen, which has got to make it an essential purchase.
