The tips for planning activities for in-service training days are very useful, and could help staff illustrate their points clearly. The author explains assessment in simple terms, and the explanations of policy are particularly easy to understand. The ‘frequently asked questions’ included highlight common concerns and situations.

Significant research findings do not always have the impact on the classroom they deserve. Unlocking Formative Assessment is designed to overcome this problem in relation to the research described by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam in their seminal pamphlet on diagnostic assessment, Inside the Black Box (1998, King’s College School of Education).

The chapters on such topics as planning and target-setting are useful, but those on sharing learning intentions, pupil self-evaluation and feedback get to the heart of formative assessment.

If pupils understand clearly what they are meant to be learning, rather than simply completing the activities and exercises they are set, they are far more likely to benefit from the lesson.

Shirley Clarke provides plenty of examples taken from real classrooms of how formative assessment works in practice, with tables and posters for teachers to adapt to suit their own contexts.

The emphasis is on a whole-school approach. Each chapter includes a box of practical Inset ideas to get things started. The title of the final chapter, “Using this book to make a difference”, signals clearly the author’s intention to offer a realistic strategy.

She acknowledges the likely obstacles, for example, from teachers who feel too pressurised already to take on new initiatives, and she suggests ways to overcome the problems.

As she explains: “What matters is that every teacher is clear about the rationale for the practices in the school – why you are doing what you do.”

About the Author
Shirley Clarke is lecturer in assessment and curriculum at the Institute of Education, University of London, and author of the hugely popular “Targeting Assessment in the Primary Classroom”. An experienced primary teacher and advisory teacher, and a popular speaker, she runs numerous local and regional training courses on classroom assessment. She is also a regular contributor to the Times Educational Supplement. Shirley’s books with H&S Educational include “Unlocking Formative Assessment” (2001), “Targeting Assessment in the Primary Classroom” (1998) and “Key Words Spelling” (with Barry Silsby, 1997). She is also editor of “Tracking Significant Achievement in the Early Years” and of the H&S Managing Primary Mathematics series.

Every Primary school should have this invaluable book!
This new book focusing on formative assessment in Primary schools, covers all the latest assessment issues such as target setting, pupil self-evaluation, giving feedback to pupils, sharing learning objectives with pupils, monitoring and many other aspects too. These are set in the context of Literacy, Numeracy and Curriculum 2000. For those involved with leading in-service training in school, there is even an INSET handout section at the back! There are plenty of very practical suggestions and strategies along with numerous illustrations. Primary schools everywhere would do well to invest in a copy of this book which makes a very valuable contribution to the issues surrounding formative assessment. This book compliments Shirley Clarke's earlier book "Targeting Assessment in the Primary Classroom"

A Good Buy For Student Teachers!
As a student teacher, I found this book a useful resource for quotations and background reading for a number of essays for my QTS course. It was relevant for both pedadgogic and subject specific essays.It contains up to date, succinct information which is relatively easy to access and the bullet point format removes the tedium found so frequently in these types of books. I'd consider this to be a worthwhile investent for the bookshelf of the student teacher!

If you are ever having problems with formative assessment then this is the book for you. There is a lot of descriptive text but it is worth it's weight in gold just for the child-speak targets for writing in the back!
