Product Description

The Cambrai battlefields are largely ignored in favour of the
more well known areas of the Somme and Ypres and consequently the woods and
fields yield some surprising discoveries.

Photographed 89 years to the week of the 1917 battle, this large format
collection of haunting and evocative images show how the battlefields look
today.

The book contains photos of many well preserved sites often on private land
and not generally accessible to the public, the remote cemeteries that dot
the area, as well as some fascinating "then and now" comparisons.

Customer Reviews

A great addition to a neglected subject.5
I bought this book as a companion to a book I already own "Cambrai: Hindenburg Line" by Jack Horsfall.

The author visits many of the locations in that book, but does bring a far fresher perspective to the locations photographing them from more imaginative angles and in more dramatic lighting.

The section on the cemeteries is particularly moving, so many young men, but beautifully tended by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

A great book for anyone's World War 1 library and a valuable addition to the history of a curiously neglected battle.

Good idea - poor execution1
This could and should have been very good - but is is'nt. Poor photographs and even worse presentation.

Could of done a lot better!1
I bought this book with research into Cambrai and I'm still none the wiser. There are too many poor quality photos and vast amounts of space that should of been filled by text. Some of the pictures don't have any captions so you have no idea where they are.
This is trying to be to 'arty' and it fails. I have 100's of books and unfortunately this is the worst so far!
There are a lot better books on Cambrai.
