This IS how it was, wagons in the complexity of railway life.1948-544
This book is a scholarly work that provides invaluable data for the enthusiast of detail. Whether it is detail for history's sake or for the production of accurate modelling.
However it makes the mistake that many books (essentially data books) make in that while it explains some of the terminology it doesn't explain it all. A comprehensive glossary would have moved this work into the 5 star category.
One other observation is that the photographs show the complete wagon at the expense sometimes of the differing details. Again it boils down to the presumptions made by the author and editors that the reader knows the terminology and understands the references to detail.
This book, it must be said brings the primary usefulness of the railways into sharp focus and really shows how much the period covered was vital to the economy of the nation. The shear mixture of wagons needs to seen to be understood, to realise that once we thought real entrepreneurs mattered and if they wanted to ship their products in a particular way then it was our privilege to serve them to see them successful. I wonder why we forgot that?
