About the Author
Peter Jones has been addicted to railways, and modelling them, for as long as he can remember. In 1949 he took his first hesitant steps in garden railways, in 16mm scale running on 0 gauge track. He began an apprenticeship in modelling that has led to his extensive work in the railway scene. Peter has written widely on the subject, including a long-running column in Garden Railway magazine. His previous book, Practical Garden Railways, was also published by Crowood in 2006. Peter has his own website www.comptondown.co.uk Resident: Pembrokeshire, West Wales

Great intro to building steamers5
I've dabbled with steam engines in the garden for a while, but building my own loco always seemed a bridge too far. This book is really useful in terms of helping you decide if you want to make that step, and if you do it holds your hand through the steps.

Very useful encouragement for those new to Live Steam!5
I very much enjoyed this book. It is not really designed to give an absolute blow-by-blow account of building a Live Steamer, but it does do a great deal to enthuse and encourage you to have a go! I have found myself returning to it several times since first reading it - always a good sign!

Peter looks at quite a few engines, ranging from converting a ready to run commercial loco (into some thing more interesting and proto-typical), through one of LBSC's simpler designs, some more unusual NG engines and he ends with a set of drawings and a description of a Gauge 1 scale LNWR engine.

I did not always agree with some of his ideas but he does proceed at a nice and easy to understand pace - and whilst there were no great suprises to me - I very much enjoyed this book. I like the excellent colour photos and Peter's relaxed approach to everything. If you are thinking of building a live steam engine in the Garden Scales - I think this book will provide you with a lot of encouragement and generally help to de-mystify the whole process.
