The PowerShot G9 is taking over from the legendary PowerShot G7. This superb camera has improved performances and the best Canon technology for even better quality pictures. For example, it has a high-capacity sensor with 12 million effective pixels and a powerful 6x optical zoom. You can take large format shots with the G9 yet still capture the tiniest details in incredible colour, thanks to DIGIC III processing. You don't need to worry about camera shake when you're framing a shot because the G9 has an optical image stabilisation system that compensates for movement and eliminates blur; along with 1600 ISO sensitivity, this system means your pictures turn out sharp and rich in colour, even in low-lighting conditions. The G9 is easy to use, and its design is based on the user-friendliness of traditional cameras. You can adjust the ISO sensitivity settings on this camera, and the LCD screen has been enlarged to 3", allowing you to monitor all your shots before and after taking them. It even has a traditional optical viewfinder. With all this, you'll want to take the PowerShot G9 with you everywhere you go!

This is a superb camera
I finally decided it was time to upgrade my old faithful 4 mega-pixel Minolta and took some time in choosing its replacement. Buying this camera is one of the best decisions I've ever made.
It is the ideal camera for those people who want considerably more than a point-and-shoot camera but occasionally want to do just that. Its various preset modes are excellent - in particular I've found the indoor and snow modes so good that there really isn't a need to manually set shutter speed, focus and so on. However if you like playing around with these or taking unusual shots, everything can be manually adjusted and better still, several user combinations can be stored and recalled when necessary. The picture clarity is excellent and the camera is instantly responsive.
I've only found two slight problems with the camera. Firstly it seems to struggle a little, unusually, in bright sunshine. It takes a fair bit of fiddling around to stop it taking shadows so dark that all detail is obscured. Secondly even in portrait mode, it seems to have fun red-eyeing everyone! However this can easily be corrected with the online editing mode.
A final thing worth mentioning - this is not a small or light camera. It will fit in a jacket pocket but not a trouser pocket. However if that isn't a problem for you, I can't recommend this camera highly enough at this price.
Had to send 2 back and then went for a refund
A ring around the lens fell off on the first day so I sent the camera back for a replacement. The replacement arrived promptly and even before a courier had collected the faulty one. I had the second G9 for 3 weeks, but then it developed a scraping noise when the lens was moving in and out. On closer examination, a plastic seal or skirt had come loose. I sent the camera back for a refund this time. Will get a well built DSLR instead. Had the first camera been OK - or even the second one - I'd have rated it 4 or 5 stars, but poor quality control on an expensive camera isn't what I was after.
This is a great camera
The Canon G9 is an amazing camera. I can't fault in any way. It's feel is solid and seems reassuringly well built. It's not a true "point and shoot" as you can have the same level of creative control as with a DSLR.
I have three Canon DSLR's and love them all but this is the camera that I find myself taking on daily excursions to just about anywhere. The controls are very "Canon" and so anyone who is familiar with Canon controls will get it almost without looking at the instructions.
to me, this camera fits neatly into a position in Canon's camera range. It is a clever addition to somebody like me who is an enthusiastic amateur photographer but does not always want to lug the DSLR around.
It is a good uprgrade from a true "point and shoot" and will quickly reward you just hours after it comes out of the box. It's movie capability is also great and with a 4gb card in there I reckon it makes a video camera a bit redundant, particularly if you have a laptop and cardreader handy so that you can wipe the card clean after every day's shooting.
I love mine and I am really pleased that I bought it.
