Far from Nikon's finest hour
The D200 is quite thirsty on the juice especially if you shoot NEFs or use a lot of built-in flash. If you use long lenses handheld or shoot portrait mode you could also benefit from a battery grip for balance and handling. Unfortunately the Nikon D200 battery grip is not very good. Design and function are up to Nikon's usual high standards - I have found materials, build quality and longevity are sadly not. Nikon are also aware that there are issues with this item - specifically the white tabs that hold the batteries in can break off, once broken the batteries press against a door latch which is less than substantial. The latest version has slightly beefed up tabs - but this is not the only issue. The whole grip flexes slightly and lacks the rigidity of the camera. If Nikon sold this at the same price as one of the batteries it would be fair because a battery is a disposable item - you may unfortunately find so is the MB-D200. Caveat emptor.

Just the ticket!
If you're looking to add a little more juice to your already-power-hungry Nikon D200 or indeed the Fujifilm S5 Pro, then this is the add-on you need!

The battery grip rightly supports either two Nikon batteries or 6 AAs. I would advise using the Nikon batteries as their performance is ultimately much better than that of shelfline AAs. Using rechargeable AA batteries with a capacity of around 2800mah results in an incredibly long charged period, and offers ultimate juice. To note, however, that when using 6 AAs the weight increases substantially and when coupling with a long telephoto lens this can be a pain.

The build quality is not the same as the D200, and is definitely plasticky. Also of note is the lack of weather sealing, meaning you'll need extra care in the rain. A definite bonus is the inclusion of a shutter button and appropriate aperture/shutter dials, making this grip very versatile indeed.

All minor niggles aside, the MB-D200 is a fantastic piece of kit and really worth the money if you're looking for the extra-stability/longer-life package that's necessery in today's photography.
