Last chance for compact Super CCD with optical viewfinder?
I settled on this camera after originally opting for the higher spec A920. When I got it home I was shocked to find there was no optical viewfinder. It seems that the A500 is the last to have one. It's true that only a small percentage of people will use a viewfinder but I think it is far more important than many other features for three reasons.
Firstly, you can catch a moving subject. Trying to follow your subject when the screen goes black for half a second is almost impossible, especially at full optical zoom. I recently took many good pics at a gravity sports event and the results were great. The option of changing the exposure time means you can blur the background to different levels too.
Secondly, you can see what you're looking at in bright light.
Thirdly, you can turn off the screen and save your batteries. LCD screens eat battery life; switch it off and they'll last ages. This said, Fuji have stuck with AA batteries which means you're not completely stuffed if they run out.
Fuji's SuperCCD sensors don't seem to get mentioned much nowadays but on their release they were hailed as revolutionary. I've used two fujis for a couple of years and the 3mp SuperCCD gives noticeably better results than the 4mp CCD. This gave me a dilema. I would have chosen a higher spec. Sony with optical viewfinder but that would have meant no SuperCDD. Looks like this may be my last fuji though.

Nice camera, shame about the supplier.
This is a great little point and shoot camera, especially for the price. I have no complaints about it at all. The only let-down came through Pixmania, actually a French-based company who supplied a manual in French rather than English and whose website did not supply the promised link to a downloadable English manual and who proved uncontactable on the issue due to their customer service option consisting of drop-down menus featuring pre-set questions and a premium rate phone number (not open on weekends). Luckily the menus on this camera are quite user-friendly and intuitively designed, so I had few problems getting to grips with it at short notice (I bought it couple of days before a holiday). Therefore I would recommend the camera but advise prospective buyers to choose a different supplier.

Good camera but lived too short a life!
I bought this camera 2 years ago and it died on me last week. I always treated it well and kept it ina carrying case but it started telling me new batteries were empty and turning itself off and then finally the zoom broke and wouldn't come out, rendering the camera useless. However it was a good little camera for the two years that i had it for, i just wished it had a longer lifetime. I won't be buying Fuji again.
