Very impressed by the jump in quality from a compact camera to this one
Hi - First to set the scene, I am not a photograpy expert...far from it actually.
I wanted to buy a new camera because I found that my old digital Cannon powershot was not giving me good quality anymore (may be I became more fussy).
I hesitated months...I mean it... probably around 8 months.
I initially thought I would buy a Cannon EOS SLR but in the end, the Nikons felt better; I was also put off by a series of reports on fault on the cannon and poor inside lighting pictures.
I then hesitated on the DX40 but since I am a total amateur, It was a lot of money. I decide on the D40 because 2 people told me that 10M versus 6M pixels really makes little difference if you do not plan to print on large format (I print nothing pretty much).
I then made the jump and bought it just before going on vacation to the US and the result is around 300 pictures - all prefect, impressive colors etc... The machine is easy to get started with (menus are simple etc...) and it just works. It is also very quick to take a picture so when the tourists around you are moving and are about to go in the frame, you manage to avoid them because the camera is quick.
Don't forget to buy some memory (I went for 4Gb at around 19GBP): perfect too.
So bottom line, if you can afford it and you want a nice SLR camera just because that what you want or for whatever other reasons...no hesitation.
Great Starter DSLR
I asked lots of friends who are much better than I and they all suggested this camera as a starter for someone who wants to explore photography as a hobby! It's a great camera for point and shoot and very easy to understand. the menu can be as easy to understand or adapted to add all the extra's which i don't yet understand. The handbook was helpful. The editing suite that comes with it is also very simple and basic, so great for someone learning. I would highly recommend it in an age where there are som many camera's available. yes, it only has 6mp but that hasn't changed the photo's that I have taken and the quality when they are blown up! Also, as I read somewhere, the composition of a photo is nothing if the focus isn't spot on, so if you know someone wanting to start then this camera is easy to use and understand and I love it! I have also uploaded some of the photo's I took on the camera - so you can see how bad I am and how great the camera is!
Well worth the money!
You dont need glasses to use this top bit of kit
Before admitting the need for laser eye treatment and having got great results from a Canon compact ixus 500 when I could see without blurr I saw the cashback deal for Nikon and thought I might be able to use a new SLR without having to find my glasses before thinking of taking a picture. Age was the factor in the need for change but for the long-sighted in denial this camera was the answer for me. What a result - something easy to use, readable, substantial in the hand and producing ace photos! Put that with the cashback, the next day delivery and a huge discount via Amazon and before you know it taking pictures is better than it was 10 years ago.
