Excellent USB External drive
This product is fantastic, it is the only drive I could find that has a low power mode where it shuts the drives down when not being accessed. I have this connected to a Buffalo Linkstation Live and have it doing weekly backups to the FreeAgent. This works perfectly.
BEWARE: Do not buy this drive from PixMania! As per previous posts, I ordered mine from Pixmania only to have the drive come up with disk errors. Pixmania customer service was good and they sent me a replacement drive with exactly the same issue, this drive is now on it's way back to Pixmania and I am getting a refund. I bought the same device now from Maplin with no issues. Looks like Pixmania need to address either a batch issue or an issue with their shipping.
The Most Unstable Piece of Hardware Ever
The drive worked fine for the first few months. It was only used to store back-ups of photos and my 20GB music collection.
Just 6mths in things started to go wrong. There was no light to the device. Despite wasting 3 hrs trying the various online advice to get it working (involving changing the computer manage settings), it transpired that the plug was faulty and no power being supplied to the unit. This would have been the first thing to check had the site not been so adament that it could be my pc at fault - not reading the hardware. Shortly after, once I used someone elses power supply, I started to receive write errors. This would involve either no folders/files appearing (as though they did not exist - VERY WORRYING), or my laptop could'nt find the freeagent drive. The second scenario would involve me having to disconnect the drive, take it into work, connect it to my work pc, then the drive would kick into life. I would then use it at home for a few days, either at home or work, then the same would happen all over - or i'd get the write errors again.
I am writing this review right now as I have just sent an email to Seagate warrenty dept demanding they take the unit back. The final straw is I have a new laptop with Vista. Worked fine for a week. Just connected my freeagent drive for the first time...Blue Screen mini-dump errors 3 TIMES now! Will not work.
My advice is stay well clear. When I bought this item late last year, the reviews were 4-5 stars on amazon. I notice now the avg has gone right down. Is this because people are now revisiting the score they provided this poor product? Wish i'd gone for the more ugly maxtor drive now.
Broke down within hours...
I would not have this product again. As so many have said on here, it died within hours of first use. It was a birthday gift to my son and a very expensive mistake.
