Manufacturer's Description
A thoroughly modern design that's optimized for select Canon EOS digital SLRs. Its angle of view is equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, with a floating optical system that can focus down to full life-size (1: 1) magnification. Inner focusing, driven by a silent and powerful ring-type USM, means the lens' overall length never changes during focus. This lens is a wonderful multi-purpose lens that's equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits or available-light photos.
Customer Reviews
Macro heaven for not much moolah!
I've had this lens a few days now and had the opportunity to do a few sessions with it and am very, very pleased with the results.
The lens feels solid and well built, heavy enough without being too much.
This lens has an EF-S mount so has been designed specifically with the Canon range of digital cameras in mind such as 300D, 350D and the new 400D which I currently have this lens hooked up to. The lens is not suitable for Canon's 1D and 5D but I'm guessing if you afford one of those you'll likely own the 180mm macro 'L' lens ;)
Auto focus is good and fast in good light and the lens length does not change during focusing. There is provision on the front to attach a ring flash for real close macro work too. There is a distance indicator scale on the lens barrel and also a full time manual focus ring. Excellent!
The results from the lens are simply stunning. Clarity is unbelievable from my 400D. Focal length equates to 96mm because of the 1.6x crop factor of the sensor allowing 1:1 size shots and boy do they show the detail!
The lens focuses as close as 9cm for the full 1:1 macro and whilst this is fine for inanimate objects it may be tricky to release the full potential of the lens if taking shots of wildlife such as small insects for example. This is where I think a remote control shutter release would be a godsend as you can set the camera up and step away to avoid disturbing your subject - that's next on my list!
I've not had the chance to use it as such yet but by all accounts the lens works very well as a portrait lens and I can see no reason to disbelieve what I've read on various forums. In fact it may even lose you a few friends as the lens is so sharp it shows up e-v-e-r-y detail! A bit of soft focus tinkering in Photoshop may be in order for human portrait shots!
Have a look on my flickr profile (brainleek007) at the shots of the workings of a pocketwatch if you're in any doubt as to the quality of the lens.
Very highly recommended and the Amazon price is around £[...] cheaper than well known high street photography stores.
Sharp enough to make your eyes bleed
I bought this lens along with my eos 350D( it doesnt work with normal eos cameras as it is EF-S). The lens is very well made and as it is USM is silent and fast when focussing, which by the way is entirely internal( ie there is no change in length of the lens when focusing). The pictures are very, very sharp and the bokeh is brillant. Try it out and see- i can assure you that you wont be disappointed. It is also relatively small. As there is a 1.6 magnification in canon digital is actually works out to be 96 mm macro. This lens is really worth it- the only detractors are people who also use the normal eos full frame cameras. It is an excellent macro and potrait lens. This should have been a L lens.
FAB! Buy one now!
This is a fantastic lens. I was originally looking at some other cheaper makes but so dam glad I parted with the extra money (which in truth was not that much more).
As the others write, the lens is Sharpe and very salient. A silly little thing which I really like is the fact you can have the autofocus setting on and still be able to manually help it a little without the usual horrible noise from the motor sounding like you're about to severely damage it. No idea if this is really allowed or not but seems not to damage it and allows me to get that required picture much faster.
In short, another happy owner of this lens. If you want to see some pics taken with it go to www.flickr.com/photos/marcoastesiano where you can see some quick snaps of some fruit and the best is the matches. Notice the detail. The 60mm allows you to be at a good distance to take them.
Great lens!!
