Manufacturer's Description
canoncam_IXUS100ISsilver

Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS Silver - IXUS design, distilled.

Manufacturers Product Description
The Digital IXUS 100 IS delivers exceptional style in an ultra-slim form.  Beautiful photos are made easy by a host of intelligent Canon technologies, and can be supplemented by stunning HD video.

Benefits

12.1 Megapixels
The number of megapixels determines the amount of sharp detail a digital camera can record. With more megapixels, you can print at larger sizes, plus crop and enlarge without sacrificing quality. IXUS cameras provide all the resolution you need for finely detailed, photo-quality prints with plenty of scope for post-shoot cropping. A 12.1 Megapixel sensor lets you capture every scene in ultra-high levels of detail - perfect for turning your experiences into poster-sized photo prints.

3x Optical Zoom
Get the shot you want with a powerful 3x Optical Zoom and genuine Canon optics. Not only does the zoom get you up close quickly, but Canon optical technology ensures that your shots are bright, clear, and alive with true, vivid color.

Optical Image Stabilizer
Any slight shake while hand-holding a camera can cause blurred photos. Canon's optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology ensures crisp, clear images by detecting and correcting this camera shake. The camera is able to microscopically adjust its own lens with absolute accuracy up to 4,000 times every second, so the image you see is the image you capture. Image Stabilizer is especially useful at full zoom, which exaggerates camera movements, and in low-light settings that call for slower shutter speeds.

Smart Auto Mode
Smart Auto has the intelligence to recognise 18 different scenes, from Portrait and Landscape right through to Macro (Close-Up). With AUTO Mode engaged, you no longer have to worry about selecting options from the camera menu. You are safe in the knowledge that your camera will use the most appropriate settings to optimise your image. For extra simplicity, the Easy mode function reduces the amount of information shown and all buttons except the shutter and flash are disabled. In Easy Mode the Digital IXUS 100 IS exemplifies the term "point and shoot".

Motion Detection
With the inclusion of DIGIC 4, Canon's Motion Detection Technology now has more accurate judgement of subject speed. The 4 key detections are still made: Changes in brightness detected by the AE function; Changes between frames - pixel shift; Face Detection movements; Camera shake detected by the IS system

When the camera detects a face, Motion Detection Technology will now adaptively vary the shutter speed according to the speed of the face movement. The amount of camera shake is also taken into consideration and the aperture is set to obtain the optimum exposure for that perfect shutter speed. When the widest possible aperture does not provide a good exposure the ISO speed is increased.

Face Detection, Self Timer and Blink Detection
Utilising the power of DIGIC 4, Canon's Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting subjects in the frame and setting the correct focus, flash level and exposure. With Blink Detection technology turned on the camera will show a warning that a person in the photo had their eyes closed. This displays for three seconds whilst reviewing the shot right after shooting. With face detection self timer, the camera records the number of people detected when the self-timer is started. If photographer enters the frame (i.e. the number of people increases), the camera detects this and adjusts the focus and exposure. So you can take your time to get into the picture as the camera will wait until you are detected.

Red Eye Correction
The popular feature can now remove red-eye automatically during shooting, as well as in playback mode.

DIGIC 4
Processing the vast amount of data generated by the Digital IXUS 100 IS calls for power and speed. Enter DIGIC 4 with iSAPS technology, Canon's most advanced imaging processor yet. It is the power of DIGIC that delivers the superb image quality, responsive camera performance, faster AF, faster continuous shooting and extended battery life. DIGIC processors are so fast they can read, process, compress and write image data back to the buffer between exposures, reducing the data bottleneck for extended continuous shooting.

2.5" LCD Screen
The camera's 2.5-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This extra-durable, high-resolution screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor LCD II screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient.

HD Movies
Shoot super-smooth, VGA quality movies with sound. In-camera editing gives you creative control and slow-motion playback highlights every precious moment. With the new HDMI connection, shoot HD quality movies straight from your camera. Direct movie playback is possible via the HDMI connection and Image playback is also possible through HDMI for slideshows and review.

Additional Features

Optical Viewfinder
The viewfinder can be used to conserve power by turning the LCD monitor off while shooting. Use the LCD monitor to compose close-ups in macro mode since images composed with the viewfinder may be off-center.

My Colours
Add a personal touch to your image or movie with Canon's My Colours. Choose from vivid blue for the sky, antique sepia for the portrait or classic black and white for the landscape. These creative options and many more - normally available only on a computer - can be applied directly from your camera, before or after the shot.

    Canon Ixus 100 IS5
Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS Digital Camera - Silver (12.1 MP, 3.0x Optical Zoom) 2.5" LCD

This is a superb camera for a non-professional user like myself who is seeking to produce top quality pictures. It is extremely small and light, sliding into the pocket when a larger camera would be an encumbrance. The quality of video recording is amazingly good, giving crisp, clear, full screen footage and sound when transferred to a PC. The software is easy to install and use and is very intuitive so there is little need to consult the manual if you have used a digital camera before.

An excellent, tiny camera for general use, with amazing video performance4
First of all, this camera is VERY small - it's an ultra compact compact - and you really can take it anywhere at no inconvenience and when you unpack it from the box you'll probably think 'this is even smaller than I thought' I think this is because the corners are so smoothly rounded it feels tiny!

Secondly, it has an excellent auto mode and a good face recognition AF system. The menu's are nicely laid out and it's intuitive. The auto white balance is generally very good, and it takes great snapshots. I particularly like the way that with one button press in auto mode you can bring up exposure compensation and that the EV scale then stays there until you put it away again - this is superb especially when shooting into the light (a notorious way to confuse the metering with any camera!)

Please don't be fooled by the 'megapixel' wars though - all these latest compacts have a tiny sensor and the result is that although the photo's are physically 'large' in terms of their overall size they are not comparable to a professional or SLR camera in terms of detail and file quality. (This is not a Canon-only issue, of course - you can't get full frame performance in something so small you lose it in your pocket!)

The lens is OK, although it's a shame it does not have an F2.8 setting (having said that the low light performance with no flash is still quite good, because the higher ISO performance is good -at ISO400 and 800 you get good compensation for the lens' lack of a really wide aperture!)

I was particularly drawn to the fact that this camera has a proper optical viewfinder, since I am able to hold steady and frame shots better using the camera up to my eye than with an LCD, but the sheer tiny size of it makes it less of an advantage than I had expected - it's kind of recessed into the curved top and you have to press the camera into your face quite a bit to see!

The real strength of this camera is its video mode. It is quite simply astonishing. I mean - basically this is a HD video camcorder in a tiny camera body! We got the camera as a take anywhere alternative to my professional camera and with a young son the video side of things is very important to us -the movie mode on this does not disappoint - I was blown away!

Overall I'm really impressed and the camera does exactly what I wanted of it, but if your list of requirements is stills first movies second I would not recommend it, instead pointing you at the non HD video versions from Canon which have better photo taking abilities. As an alternative if you wanted a non Canon product you could also look at the Sony DSC-W300 which loses HD video but gains a Zeiss F2.8 lens which is very likely to give it the edge as a camera.

    What a little gem5
This is really compact and it 'does do what it says on the tin' Have found it really easy to use and it takes great pictures on auto mode, this is the easy to use mode, just point and shoot. I print many of the pictures taken and the quality of the pictures this camera produces is second to none. It has too many functions to mention here but I have tried many of them with great success. The camera is light and slim great for taking about with you either on holiday or just a day out, fits more than comfortably into a pocket, so no bulk to carry. Highly reccomended.
