Customer Reviews
Excellent little modem
I'll keep this short and sweet. I wanted an ethernet modem to stick in front of my router so, having had some good experiences with Netgear in the past, I picked the DM111P.
Configuring the unit was easy (via the standard web interface) as was uploading the latest firmware to the modem. All in all - a 5 minute job.
The modem has a fair amount of statistical information (line stats etc) although, as you would expect, you won't be able to get to this when it's the wrong side of a router WAN port.
The unit is smaller than I thought it would be and comes with a nice set of clip on legs which allow it to be stood up on its side. The pack includes all the things you would expect - including frequency splitter and ethernet cable etc..
I've read a few criticisms that this equipment runs hot. Although this is true - it's no hotter than any other unit I have running on my desk. So far, the connection has been extremely stable. I can't ask for more than that really.
A great little modem
As an IT Manager used to setting up modems, routers etc, via the web interface rather than the Wizard, I didn't have any of the problems that other reviewers seem to have encountered. It took a couple of minutes to setup my ISP settings and off it went. It's been connected now for 3 weeks without a single dropout, which is more than can be said for the D-Link DSL-300T that it replaced.
Don't bother with the CD wizard, use your web browser and you won't have any problems (I hope)
I buy a lot of Netgear kit because it's easy to setup, reliable, and excellent value for money. This modem is no exception.
DM111P
Having ordered the modem I was a bit concerned to find from other reviews that it seems to be prone to over-heating. However I have fitted the supplied legs such that the power input cord is at the top, so that any heat will dissipate harmlessly and this seems to have done the trick, it certainly works OK and shows no signs of over-heating.
It was purchased for my neighbour, who was away on holiday when it arrived so I set it up at home, not using the CD-ROM but going to 192.168.0.1 from my web browser. The settings receommended by my ISP (same as my neighbour)were put in and it burst into immediate life.
Looking on the Netgear Website there seems to be no sign of any firmware upgrades, but I found that these were accessed from the modem setup function at the above IP address, likewise the user manual.
The fun started when I took it round to my neighbour's house and installed it there: the settings I had put in had changed (I suspect that this was due to it detecting a different phone number) and doing a hard reset caused it to get really confused. Fortunately I had backed up the settings for my home and this brought it back to life and after another trial it was brought into action for him as well.
In summary, if you know what you're doing - it's fine, but for a novice you need to follow the instructions carefully.
