Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
The third in the series of compilations lovingly pieced together by Rough Trade's retail division, Rock And Roll 1 builds on the success of previous collections--Electronic 01 and 25 Years Of...--with an excellent precis of firebrand rock & roll that dates from the early 1970s to the present day. There's amped-up pre-punk in the shape of Rocket from the Tombs and the Electric Eels, new-Millennial scuzz-rock in the shape of the Von Bondies and the Kills, and the odd completely bizarre avant-rock classic--e.g. the Fall's "Dr Buck's Letter", where cackling vocalist Mark E Smith reads out a list of things he never leaves home without ("Five--Amex card," he barks, "They made such a fuss giving it to me/ But I spend more time getting it turned down-ah!"). What swiftly becomes clear is that Rough Trade has a real talent for unearthing essential rarities. Legendary New York punk band Crime appear on a recording for the first time in 20 years, while on "View from Here", Detroit firebrand soul group the Gories appear to have preempted the White Stripes by approximately a decade. There are a couple of notable omissions--no Kyuss? no Black Flag? But hey, this is only Rock And Roll 1. Further chapters will surely fill in the gaps, and frankly, we can't wait. --Louis Pattison
Customer Reviews
Now that's what I call REAL music!
Are you fed up with the usual garbage that is heard on radio? Well then I suggest you order this excellent collection of basically garage punk. There's some old songs (Suicide, MC5) some new (Von Bondies, The Kills) and some rarities (Crime- Hot Wire my Heart, which was covered by Sonic Youth on their 'Sister' album) and this is just volume 1! I can't wait for volume 2.
Wooooooooaaaaahhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!! Rocking baby
This is possibly one of my favourite albums of all time, (and i have a lot of albums)If you like Garage rock and roll, then this is for you, You've got every rock and roll band on here, covering the last 25 years, from the likes of MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, Pixies and The Hives, The Kills and The Von Bondies.
It's down right dirty rock
Just buy it, if you don't you will be missing out.
