Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Along with Spandau Ballet, Visage, and others, Duran Duran led the early-'80s charge of the New Romantics, a movement heavily inspired by the fashion-conscious, synth-coloured art-school antics of Bowie and Roxy Music. Duran Duran and their peers updated that sound for a new decade, adopting punk'sDIY attitude and helping to give birth to dance-rock along the way by adding a disco-ish beat.
Subsequent releases would find the band moving more toward straight pop, becomingsimultaneously less dance-oriented and less arty. The 1981 debut, however, is full of thumping, club-friendly beats andlong, atmospheric tunes full of extended synthesizer-centred interludes. The fact that the boys were pop-savvy enough to add irresistible choruses to "Girls on Film", "Careless Memories", and "Planet Earth" doesn't hurt matters.
Customer Reviews
A classic 80's album.
It's not often that bands produce consistently great material, but Duran Duran managed it with three consecutively great albums in a row. So it is fitting that Duran Duran's debut along with Seven & The Ragged Tiger should finally join Rio in their remastered forms. Excellent songs, great sound and happy memories. I'm still puzzled as to why "Sound Of Thunder" was never released as a single - but there you go. This disc has been a long wait but well worth it - not one duff track.
This album was fantastic when it first came out, and it is every bit as good today. If you own an old copy, do yourself a favour and get this new version and remember the 80's.
Must Own
This album was originally released before I was born but even now I can appreciate it's blend of catchy musical hooks and interesting lyrics. "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth" are tracks which define 80's pop. "Careless Memories" is an underated gem and "Night Boat" demonstrates a more dark and hypnotic side of the band. Perhaps the only dissapointment on the album is the largely dull "Tel Aviv" which is a confused way to end such an exciting album. But overall this album is fantastic.
Houston - We Do NOT Have A Problem!!!!!!!
The debut album, a classic from the early 80's. Re-mastered to perfection. It could have been easy to spoil this album by re-mastering, however, it sounds even better than the original. A must have for all Durannies!
