Devil May Cry 4
Having been a fan of the devil may cry series since the release of the first game, I decided to purchase the latest instalment of Devil May Cry for the PC, because I don't have a PS3 or 360.
As soon as the game was delivered I began to play it, and what can I say... WOW, The graphics were absolutely awesome, and the landscape was beautiful.
Gameplay wise, its nothing short of spectacular, the combat system has stayed true to its roots, but has had some nice little tweaks.
The storyline is the best in the series without doubt, This game is allot more character based than the others in the series, with a cast of about 8 main characters, and shows the relationships of these character's develop throughout the game.
The Soundtrack is a combination of epic thrash metal and the techno work of David Baker, no quite as good as the 3rd games soundtrack, but good none the less.
Enemies come in many shapes and sizes in this game, some new and some returning lesser demons, but the variety of them is what really stands out.
Boss fights are as epic as ever with ever more visually stunning cutscene sequence's proceeding them, each boss has to be killed in a certain way, and thus strategy is involved.
As far as pc control's go, their pretty simple to get used to, you may need a hour or so but you'll get used to it.
From the opening cutscene, right through to the credits, this game never stopped amazing me. This is truly a masterpiece of modern gaming.
It's great!
Hmm, remember Streets of Rage on the Megadrive? Yeah? Well, throw in damn nice graphics, a good soundtrack, and many moves in a 3D environment, and that's what you have, but with a damn big sword, a gun or two, and some big style bosses. It's kind of like a FFVII beat em up, without he detailed story...
Yes, it does have a very anime / Final Fantasy feel to it. I play this with all detail on full, highest res, and it looks fantastic, the attention to detail is profound. Sometimes I just stop and look at the scenery and think "the Xbox can't look this good, it just can't". The music is fantastic too, very atmospheric, though more varied battle music would be nice... There are a lot of cut scenes though, quality cut scenes with good acting, however if you're not a fan of cut scenes, well, you wont like it. It tells a story, and you're basically playing a story...
For the price you can't go wrong. I'm not using a 360 joypad, I have a Saitek. It does take a while setting up the controls and getting used to them, but is possible.
It's not totally linear, well, it is really...but there is a feeling of a world, though if you try to go too far you will be stopped by invisible walls and the like. Don't let this put you off, it's not Warcraft or even FF VII, it's not meant to be!
If you're a fan of anime or Final Fantasy VII etc... you're going to love this.
You won't be disappointed.
Great arcade hack-em-up
This is a great follow up to the third game in the series, and much more accessible/easy than its prequel. I gave up on DMC3 after a couple of levels due to my hamfistedness, but this one has a gentler learning curve. For the uninitiated, this game series has a look and feel of Japanese manga. Teen heroes with huge swords, guns and sarcasm face off against colossal bosses, on their way to rescuing pneumatic heroines, with eyes almost as large as their chests, and eyelashes that you can trip over. Daft ? Undoubtedly ! But great fun.
Players use two characters during the game, Nero, a blond youth with customary sword, gun, attitude and swishy overcoat plus an overdeveloped right arm (fnarr) to wrestle demons with; then about halfway through, you control Dante, who looks very similar, but appears to have had more success with the femme fatales of the past 3 games and does not sport the hypertrophied limb.
These characters hack, slash, shoot and combo their way through hordes of nicely textured monsters, through various levels, some scenes fixed in perspective, others allowing camera control. Rating are assigned, depending on how many moves can be strung together, time taken through levels, plus collecting what look like blobs of lime and strawberry jelly; the result of destroying scenery and beasties on the way. The overall rating then allows skills/weapons to be levelled up, new combos learnt, etc. Later levels introduce bustier characters, tougher creatures, another weapon and more fearsome moves. There are a few platform elements, but for the most part it's slice and dice all the way, with the later bosses requiring a little thought on the best way to take them down.Levels can be replayed to try to perfect ratings, and gathered souls and ratings gained do count towards your total, to help buff your character to prepare for later levels. It also appears to be the only way to get quicker access to the special missions found throughout the game without backtracking.
Graphics-wise, it's great, less ragged than DMC 3, crisp and detailed textures, though nothing really sophisticated with the DX9 version. Real gfx-philes should look elsewhere for next gen appeal. That said, the performance test through 4 stages gives your PC a score, similar to the in game one, the ATI 4870 scoring 'S', minimum frame rates all above 60 at 1920x1200 with all settings at max. I'd imagine this game to be gentler on lesser system specs and still be playable.
Ultimately, the simple and repetitive gameplay may become dull, but the combo system means perfectionists will be striving for 'SSS' rating when replaying missions.
For ease of use get a gamepad, the 360 one is perfect. For me, this is a great pick up and play monster bash, the right amount of cheesy atmosphere and OTT combat and not too difficult for the less than hardcore among us.Capcom are to be applauded for continuing to produce PC ports, and this one is very well priced against XBox 360 and PS3 equivalents. Hopefully, they'll sell more copies and decide to port Dead Rising to the PC...
