Not very well thought out
I've had the Sony for a few months now, which has given me time to get used to it's good and bad points. On the plus side, this radio will connect via USB cable to your iPod or iPhone and allow you to control your iPod from the radio. On the negative side, it doesn't do it all that well.
The main problem is that it's too darn hard to use. Bearing in mind that we're talking about a product that you're going to use while you're driving, it's nigh impossible to navigate around music without causing a major road traffic accident. It is possible to browse through the tracks and artists using the radio, but I've found that I don't use this and prefer to control the music directly from my iPhone. That's all well and good then, but the radio does have a couple of really annoying features which mean that I'll be looking for a different manufacturer when I come to replace it:
Firstly, it starts to play songs from your iPod/iPhone as soon as you switch to the USB input (or as soon as you plug in a device if the USB input is already selected). You'd think that this would be a handy feature at first, until you've heard the first few seconds of "Angel" a few hundred times - after which you realise that you'd pay good money to be able to turn this "feature" off. This also has the annoying side-effect that whatever you were listening to before you connected your player gets interrupted and your tracks just start to play in aplha order. If you listen to audiobooks in the car as I do, this means that you lose your place every time you connect the device in the car.
Secondly (and most importantly) the radio has a habit of crashing the iPhone (and my iPod too - I've tried both) around once per day. This can be really annoying if you are using an iPhone for navigation and it crashes at a crucial moment, because not only do you have to wait for your iPhone to restart, but the radio will insist that the device has disappeared until you unplug the USB cable and wait around a minute before plugging it back in. At this point, you will get the first few seconds of "Angel" (or whatever your first song is) before you can stop this groundhog day moment and re-launch your navigation app. If you forget and launch your navigation app first, you will then be unable to stop "Angel" playing and be forced to turn down the sound, which will prevent you from hearing your sat nav audio.
So, my gripes are mainly specific to problems with the iPhone. If this doesn't apply to you, then you should be fine. If however, like me, you want a device to connect to your iPhone then my advice would be to find a different radio.
Awesome Stuff!
I bought this headunit having finally gotten annoyed with using the standard Ford stereo and an itrip. Both are ok but it lacked anything other than basic features and itrips strip music of all quality.
I've only had this installed for a day but i'm loving it so far. It looks really smart, is crammed with features and works really well with my ipod. It can't be too hard to navigate the ipod if i've got it sussed already. I would say its easier to have various playlists to choose and listen to. When it comes to things like this, its more dangerous to be grabbing your ipod and changing the song.
I would also point out that if you get the appropiate connections and get the stalk controls of your car working its even easier to use.
Brilliant headunit!
