Synopsis
Burt Reynolds stars as the Bandit in this seminal portrayal of rough-ridin', beer-swillin', sheriff-dodgin', trouble-chasin' truckers. The Bandit's has taken on his craziest haul yet: a trailer full of Coors beer. If he can deliver the goods from Texarcana to Atlanta within forty-eight hours, he'll be eighty thousand dollars richer. Hilarious mayhem ensues, however, when the Bandit falls for a runaway bride (Sally Field). As they push toward Atlanta, the two have to evade Fields' vengeful father-in-law, Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason as the maniac Smokey of the title). The stakes get higher and the car chases more frenzied in this hysterical romp through the American highways. Charismatic performances by Reynolds and Gleason made this a huge box office draw. ITA winner. Academy Award Nominations: Best Film Editing.

We luv u Bandit!
What a film! They don't make films like this anymore, wow this film is so cool! Yeah! When the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) and the Snowman (Jerry Reed) take on a big money bet to bring illegal bootleg beer from Texas back to Georgia in 28 hours it almost seems too easy. However once the Bandit picks up runaway bride Sally Field along the way and they start getting pursued by Sheriff Buford T Justice and his hilarious son, things start getting a lot more interesting. Luckily thanks to their CB radios they pick up a lot of help on the way from Hot Pants Hilliard, Little Beaver, Foxy Lady, Sugar Bear and many more. Reynolds is never better than here in this wise-crackin', fast drivin' performance, Jerry Reed's laugh is awesome and Fred the dog shines amidst all the thrills. Expect high speed chases, hilarious one liners, severe breaches of the highway code and loads of truckin' fun. And what a soundtrack. Left us wanting to watch the sequels. Wow! Beats Flubber out of the park.
Classic 70's comedy
When we first got a VHS player back in the early 80's this was one of the first films we ever had, and it withstood repeated viewings.. It is strange to think that as English kids we could find such American hicksville cowboy CB radio humour entertaining but somehow we did. I think this is mainly down to the excellent comedic performances of the leads, some great stuntwork and irreverently near the knuckle humour that never quite goes over the line. Burt Reynolds is great as the charismatic Bandit and Jerry Reed, as sidekick Snowman is not only funny but sings much of the soundtrack (archetypally C&W). Sally Field, who was dating Reynolds in real-life gives a feisty performance and the chemistry between the 2 of them sizzles on screen. But the star of the show really has to be Jackie Gleason as Buford T Justice the mad Sheriff who chases our heroes across half of the USA, ending up with a car that looks like it has been through a junkyard smasher. My family STILL has its moments of Buford-channelling with such memorable lines as 'there's no way, no way, that you could come from my loins...' To the film's credit it never tries to be more than it is and enough time is given to let the character's relationships develop and the result is what appears to be a genuine affection between them. This means that despite the clothes, the jargon and the C&W music, this film has a heart to it that still entertains. I'd heartily recommend this for rainy Sunday afternoon viewing. And if you like this, check out the Cannonball Run too.
Timeless classic
I have watched this film over 10 times and still laugh at the jokes. Easy comedy for a light hearted film. Sutiable for any ages, though those of an older generation may get more of the jokes, this is a great film to just sit back and enjoy.
