Product Description
In 2005 Cardiff celebrates two special birthdays - 100 years since it was made a city and 50 years since it became capital of Wales. John O'Sullivan and Bryn Jones combine significant stories from every year of the century with personal memories of the city from its famous children and freemen to create a celebration of the Cardiff in words and pictures. Some of the more than 100 events to be included:1910 Captain Scott left Cardiff on the Terra Nova for the Antarctic; 1913 Cardiff was the biggest coal exporting port in the world; 1917 Cardiff became one of the first places in Britain to employ women as taxi drivers; 1919 Major race rioting broke out over four days in the city and three people were killed; 1927 Cardiff City won the FA Cup; 1941 The city was devastated by air raids; 1945 Jim Callaghan and George Thomas both entered Parliament for the first time, both as MPs for Cardiff; 1958 The Empire Games were held in Cardiff; 1967 The city was rocked by a dock strike; 1982 Thousands turned out to greet the Pope on his visit to the city; 1999 The National Assembly for Wales opened in the city and the Millennium Stadium opened to host the Rugby World Cup.
